John Lucas, like his father Andrew, is shown as being on the land in
1817 according to the Land Survey done by R. Sherwood of Beckwith
Township.
John also received his free land under Military Emigrant (M.E.)
No.1193 (Fiat). His "Terms of Settlement" were completed 30 August
1824 and he received 100 acres on the South West 1/2 Lot 21 Con 5
in Beckwith Township, Lanark County Ont. (John was in "The Derry").
His Order in council No. E.48 was signed 2 April 1828, and he was
given his deed on the 6 May 1828.
On the 30 March 1835, he sold his property to Colin McLaren, for the
sum of 161 pounds. He then went to Brooke Twp with his family and
his parents.
On the 7 December 1839, John bought 200 acres on Lot 12 Con 14
Brooke Township from James Larrett for the price of 100 pounds.
Their they stayed for 60 years until they passed away.
Many stories are told of the virility, of the skill, and of the strength of
this grand couple. Johnny was blind in one eye; but in spite of this, his
skill as a marksman and as a game hunter was known far and wide.
One of the floral tributes at his funeral recognized this ability. A large
wreath of flowers was made into the form of a rifle with the following
inscription "With sympathy from Watford Friends - an old pioneer".
Johnny's interests lay more in hunting and trapping than in farming.
His job was to provide the food from the forest - mainly venision and
wild turkey. Only when he had put away three barrels of wild turkey
legs and breasts was he satisfied that he had enough winter
provisions. He trapped most of these fowl. Of course he stored away
plenty of venison too for the long winter. There was little variety in
food; but they never went hungry.
Johnny and Ellen were a very devout, God-fearing couple. Johnny
always led the daily family prayers. All the family were on their knees
during these prayers and they lasted an hour. Then he would ask
Ellen to pray too. Fortunately, her prayers were very short. The grace
before meals was always said by Johnny and it too was very long.
Johnny was a large man -- heavy set with broad shoulders. Ellen was
small with red hair. Any of the Lucas' family who has auburn or red
hair can easily trace this to Ellen by the laws of heredity.
Ellen worked very hard with all the drudgery that must have gone
with raising a large family under pioneer conditions. She spun the cloth
for their clothes -- spinning in her bare feet most of the time. She used
to tell of the heavy washings of the boys' clothes as they became so
dirty at the logging bees and the bees when the logs were burned.
