WILLIAM HOY and MARGARET BROWN

HOY FAMILY
William Hoy was born 1 Sept
1816 in Stitchel Parish, Roxburghshire,
Scotland, son of Samuel Hoy and Isabella Yule or Youle.
Margaret Brown was born 14 Mar 1824 and baptised 30 Mar 1824
in Deanburn Haugh, Roberton, Selkirk, Scotland, daughter of
William Brown and Barbara Neil.
Before starting on these two
families, I think a short background is
in order to help sort them out.
Since 1974, Roxburgh County has been part
Borders County with
the former Berwickshire and Selkirk Counties.
From the Gazeteer of Scotland, edited by
John Marius Wilson, 1868.
"STITCHEL and HUME, a united parish in the district of the Merse,
on the mutual border of Roxburghshire and Berwickshire.
STITCHEL is in Roxburghshire, HUME is in Berwickshire, they were
united in 1640 and each contains a Village of its own name.
The united parish is bounded by Gordon, Greenlaw, Eccles, Ednam,
Nenthorn and Earlston. Its length from North to South is between
5 and 6 miles and its breadth is between 3 and 4 miles."
The following MAY be the parents and
siblings of Samuel Hoy.
They were chosen for Samuel because we know he had a sister
Ellen "Nelly", as Samuel's son William and Nellie's daughter
Elizabeth
were cousins. (From a history written by Elizabeth and James Cairns
son William about 1937).
WILLIAM HOY: Born around 1751 and died 18 Oct 1831,
Stitchel
Scotland. In Stitchel Parish, Roxburghshire, Scotland he married Rachel
Larmont/Learmont/Larmant, born about 1765, died 31 Oct 1837.
Both buried Stitchel, Scotland.
They had 7 children. Ellen, Esther, John, William, James, SAMUEL
and Alexander.
It is believed that William's
parents were John Hoy and Esther
Martine and that he had at least one sibling John.
From the Cemetery book for Stitchel
and Hume published by the
Borders Family History Society in 1994 is shows:
Number 274 reads: Erected by William
Hoy, tenant in Hume Mill, in
memory of his son John Hoy who died 29 Dec 1810 aged 22 years.
Also his son William Hoy who died 10 Dec 1818, aged 28 years.
And William Hoy who died 18 Oct 1831, aged 80 years and Rachel
Larment his wife who died 31 Oct 1837 aged 81 years.

14 Feb 1878. On the 28 May 1814, in Stitchel Parish,
Roxburghshire,
Scotland, he married Isabella Yule/Youle.
They had 1 child. William
There has been no records
discovered of any other children born
to this couple. BUT Rachel born 1823, is a good possibility.
Samuel came to Downie Twp.,
Perth Co., Ont., with son William
about 1845-1848.
A Samuel Hoy appears on the
1848 Agriculture Census of Downie
living on Lot 13 Con 6, and William Hoy is at Lot 13 Con 7.
In the 1861 census, Samuel is listed as a widower, living on Lot
13
Con 6, age 67 years, occupation farmer. With him is Rachel Hoy,
age 38 years (b.1823) in Scotland. Rachel is probably his
daughter,
but we have found no record of her birth. Rachel died 10 Jun 1889
at Downie, age 66 years. She never married. Also shown is Mary
Hoy, age 13 years (b.1848) Upper Canada.
The 1871 Census lists Samuel,
age 78 years (b.1793), Rachel age
50 years (b.1821), Mary B. age 22 years (b.1849), Scotland,
Isabella age 7 years (b.1864) and Robert V, age 3 years (b.1868).
No record has been unearthed
to show the death of Isabella and
we do not know who her parents were.
(1) WILLIAM HOY: Born 1 Sep 1816 in Stitchel Parish,
Roxburghshire, Scotland. He married Margaret Brown,
born
14 Mar 1824, baptised 30 Mar 1824, Deanburn Haugh,
Roberton, Selkirk, Scotland. (d/o William Brown and
Barbara Neil).
In the Parish Records we find: Samuel Hoy, hind, Todrig,
and
wife Isabella Youle, his wife, a son, born 1 Sep 1816
named
William.
Todrig is a village in the Parish of Stitchel, North of Hume.
7. ALEXANDER HOY: Baptised 1 Nov 1795 st Stitchel, Roxburough
Scotland.
BROWN FAMILY
ROBERT BROWN, married Magdalene Inglis.
They had at least 1 child. William.
1. WILLIAM BROWN: Born at Ashkirk, Roxburoughshire,
Scotland,
baptised 26 Sep 1790 at Roberton, Scotland. He married Barbara
Neil, born about 1791 at Ashkirk, Roxburoughshire, Scotland.
They had 8 children. Isobel, Magdalene, Robert, Alexander,
Margaret, Adam, Mary and Barbara.
(1) ISOBEL
BROWN: Baptised 9 Aug 1815 at Roberton. On the
15 Jan 1836 at
Roberton, she married William Scott.
They had 8
children. George, William, Barbara, Robert, Mary,
Isobella, Adam
and Margaret. (All born Deanburn Haugh).
(2)
MAGDALENE BROWN: Baptised 24 Aug 1817 at Roberton.
(3) ROBERT
BROWN: Baptised 12 Mar 1819 at Roberton.
(4)
ALEXANDER BROWN: Baptised 12 Mar 1819 at Roberton.
(5) MARGARET
BROWN: Born 14 Mar 1824, baptised 30 Mar
1824 at Deanburn
Haugh, Roberton, Selkirk, Scotland. She
married William
Hoy, born 1 Sep 1816, Stitchel Parish,
Roxburghshire,
Scotland. (s/o Samuel Hoy and Isabella
Yule/Youle).
They had 8
children. William, Barbara, Samuel, Robert,
Isabella, Thomas,
Alexander and Mary.
The clue to this birth was in the 1851 census for Dearburn
Haugh where a
William Hoy, age 5, was a grandson of
William Brown and
Barbara Neil.
There was no
Margaret in the household but when the Parish
records for
Roberton were searched and there she was.
This Williams age
would agree with that of William and
Margaret's Hoy's
first son as he was born 31 Dec 1845
according to the
1901 Census of Downie Twp., Perth Co.,
Ont., and came to
Canada in 1852.
It is known that William Hoy, born 1 Sep 1816, was in
Ontario in
1848. Perhaps Margaret was with him and their
son William
was sent or brought over later, OR maybe
wife
Margaret and William came over later. (1852).
Unfortunately some of the 1851 Census for Downie Twp., are
missing.
The information there would have perhaps answered
many of our
questions.
(6) ADAM
BROWN: Born 28 Sep 1825 at Roberton.
(7) MARY
BROWN: Born 22 Mar 1830, baptised 31 Oct 1830
at Roberton.
(8) BARBARA
BROWN: Born 1 Jun 1833 at Roberton.

THOMAS CAIRNS and BARBARA HOY
Barbara Hoy, eldest daughter of Scottish parents
William Hoy and
Margaret Brown, was born in Downie Township, Perth County, Ont.,
Canada, 6 Jul 1852. This may have been about four years after her
parents arrived in Canada from near Hawick, Berwickshire, Scotland.
She married Thomas Cairns of Plympton Township, Lambton County,
Ontario 11 June 1875.
Thomas the second youngest son of James Cairns and Elizabeth
(Betsy) Anderson, also both of Scotland, was born in Plympton
Township 16 June 1849.
The Registration of their marriage from The Ontario Vital Statistics
Records states: Thos. Cairns age 25 years, residence Downie
born in Canada, bachelor, Occupation Farmer, son of James Cairns
and Elizabeth Anderson: Barbara Hoy age 22 years, residence Downie,
born Canada, Spinster Daughter of William Hoy and Margaret Brown:
Witnesses William Cairns of Plympton (brother of the groom) and
Isabella Hoy of Downie (sister of the bride). Married Downie June 11th
1875. Religion Canadian Presbyterian for both groom and bride.
Married by Rev. John K. Hislop by Licence.
Shortly following the birth of their 3rd child, Barbara and Thomas
arrived in Manitoba on 10 May 1879. They settled first in the Gladstone
and later moved to the Emmeline District. There were 8 more children
born to this couple before Barbara died of tuberculosis in 1897. She is
buried in the Austin Cemetery.
William Cairns, Thomas' brother wrote in 1931 about Thomas Cairns
and Barbara Hoy. "Thomas Cairns married Barbara Hoy. Her father and
Thomas' mother were first cousins. He got her in Downie Township from
her father's home near Avonton. They came to Manitoba in 1879. Mrs.
Cairns died in 1897 and Thomas lives retired in MacGregor, Manitoba.
Their family losses were very severe. Only one son and four daughters
are alive. Two of the boys lie in Flanders, died in honour of their country.
Russell is working near MacGregor and stops with his folks at times.
Annie is in Vancouver. Her husband has a wholesale fruit business. The
other girls lived on farms and are all great housekeepers. Their families
are all recorded in this tree."
The following is
taken from the obituary printed in the MacGregor
Newspaper, Thursday 15 July 1943.
"The death occurred in the Portage General Hospital on July 7th, 1943
of another pioneer of the Austin and MacGregor districts, in the person
of Mr. Thomas Cairns, at the ripe age of 94 years. He had been in
failing health for some time.
Born at Plympton, Ontario on June 6th 1849, Thomas Cairns was
married to Barbara Hoy of Stratford in 1873. (Note: the registration for
this marriage gives the date as 1875). On May 10th 1879, they arrived
in Manitoba, settling for a time at Gladstone and later moving to the
Emmeline district. Mrs. Cairns re-deceased her husband on August 21,
1897, and in 1915, Mr. Cairns moved to MacGregor to reside.
Mr. Cairns was a man who was well-known and highly respected,
being a good neighbor and a kind father. In latter years his hearing and
eye-sight failed, but he had been faithfully cared for by his son, Russell,
and Daughters, Mrs. Perkins and Mrs. Poyser.
He is survived by four daughters and one son: Mrs. A. Lewis, of
Okotoks, Alta; Mrs. A. Perkins, of MacGregor; Mrs. R. Poyser,
of Austin; Mrs. A. Scott, of Vancouver, B.C.; Russell, at home and
one brother, Mr. Wm., Cairns, of MacGregor. There are also
twenty-one grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Five sons
and one daughter pre-deceased their father, including two sons Garnet
and Lindsay, who paid the supreme sacrifice in the World War
1914-1918.
The funeral was held Friday afternoon from the MacGregor United
Church, and was attended by many relatives and sympathizing friends
and neighbors.
Interment was in the family plot in the Austin cemetery. McKillop's

The following article was printed
in the Free Press probably
in early to
mid 1917 with a picture of the 2 boys.
E.L.H. W. Cairns (Left) and Pte. G.C. Cairns
The names of these two young men,
Pte. Lindsay H. W. Cairns, and
Pte. Garnet C. Cairns have been inscribed on Canada's glorious roll
of honor, both having made the supreme sacrifice in France, the
former on June 27th and the latter on October 26th. That they were
loyally willing and proud to do their bit for king and country is
evidenced by the patriotic emblems which surround their photograph.
The sentiment connected with this picture is one of these human and
patriotic touches of the war. It was received by their father, Mr.
Thomas Cairns, of MacGregor, but a short time before the news of
their being killed in battle was received, accompanied by messages
of courage and hope and determination to play their part manfully.
They were good examples of those thousands of gallant sons that
have been given by Canada for the great cause of human liberty and
justice, whose fame will be undying.
The brothers left Winnipeg with Lt.-Col. Gillespie's battalion in
October of last year. Another member of the Cairns family, Russell,
offered his services three times and has finally been accepted.
William Cairns a well-known business man of MacGregor, is an uncle
of these splendid lads. - Free Press.
