Her Hair

He loved her hair, especially as it lay loosely around her on the pillow in the morning. Most people saw it piled neatly atop her head, in a business-like chignon; plaited in cheerful braids; or hidden beneath one of her many berets or scarves. Its beauty was saved for him.

Before they married, they had talked about her hair. Tradition dictated that a wife's hair be hidden from the sight of all except her husband, but neither of them believed in tradition for tradition's sake alone. They wanted to understand and to choose those traditions which would have meaning in their lives. This one spoke to them both.

In some ways it was a little thing. The world around them wouldn't notice if her hair was down. And surely there would be days where to be able to brush it out and run, or even cut it short, would be the easier way. But she wanted to give him the gift of her hair. And the more he thought about it, the better he understood. Even though they spent so much time apart, each of them busy with what they had to do, the knowledge that none but him would have the privilege of seeing her hair rain down freely was always with him, and made him happy.

Every night when they returned home, it was he who let her hair loose. Sometimes it was a playful moment, sometimes a quiet one, and other times a erotic precursor of what was to come. But always it was their moment together. They'd kiss and he'd reach for the pins or whatever held her hair fettered that day, allowing it to flow freely.

During the day, he'd find himself reliving these moments, enjoying the sensual pleasure which they gave him. Feeling her body pressed closely to him, watching her hair cascade down her back, sniffing the herbal scent of her shampoo, pushing through the hair to nuzzle her ear or her neck. Knowing that she was his. He'd run his fingers through it, pushing it off of the smiling face turned up to him, and then reach for her brush, restoring order and peace to the chaos that billowed around them.
