The dive was steepening. They passed over the houses of Parliament at 1600
feet with the rate of descent off the clock. Only eighteen seconds had elapsed
since the missile's warhead detonated. In the cabin the passengers began to
scream. Ben Maier held to his seat and prayed. One stewardess, brave and
composed, clutching a bulkhead, managed to use the intercom.
'Please keep calm. Brace yourselves. Everything will be okay'
The noise from the rear was a roar they all could hear. People on the ground
heard it too and saw the giant plane with smoke pouring from its tail and shreds
of metal falling from it like leaves.
