How Can You Be Sure?
Seen all good things and bad
Running down the hill
All so battered and brought to the ground
I am hungry again, I am drunk again
All the money I owe to my friends
When I'm like this
How can you be smiling, singing
How can you be sure?
How can you be sure?
If you walk out the door
Will I see you again?
If so much of me lies in your eyes
I am hungry again, I am drunk again
All the money I owe to my friends
When I'm like this
How can you be smiling, singing
How can you be sure I don't want you?
How can you be sure I don't want you?
How can you be sure I don't want you?
How can you be sure I don't want you?
I don't want you, I don't want you anymore
I don't want you, I don't want you anymore
This song probably should have been on The Bends. In fact, Colin loves the song and pushed heavily for it to be included. However this never happened. A very strong b-side tho..a slow ballad in the vein of some of the other Radiohead songs at the time such as 'High and Dry' and 'Bullet Proof'. On the whole, the song is acoustic with some very good vocals from Thom. This song is not widely available now but can be found on CD1 of the Fake Plastic Trees UK single. Should be played live more often...
An older version of this song has been discovered. It dates from 1991 and pre-dates Pablo Honey which means Radiohead wrote this song 4-5 years before it was released. An early version of Maquiladora has also been found which suggests that due to the state Radiohead were in during 1995 with all the touring pressures and stardom, the band chose to dig into the archives and dust off old tunes for use as B-sides for The Bends. We should be glad that they did, Maquiladora and How Can You Be Sure? are excellent tracks, but it is interesting when you look back at interviews and in particular what Thom said about, 'The Bends B-sides not being up to standard...'. Up to his own high standards maybe, but at least we now know why he said that. Check out the original, How Can You Be Sure? here.
