My Iron Lung
Faith, you're driving me away
You do it everyday
You don't mean it
But it hurts like hell
My brain says I'm recieving pain
A lack of oxygen
From my life support
My iron lung
We're too young to fall asleep
To cynical to speak
We are losing it
Can't you tell?
We scratch our eternal itch
A twentieth century bitch
And we are grateful for
Our iron lung
The head shrinkers
They want everything
My uncle Bill
My Belisha beacon
The head shrinkers
They want everything
My uncle Bill
My Belisha beacon
Suck, suck your teenage thumb
Toilet trained and dumb
When the power runs out
We'll just hum
This, this is our new song
Just like the last one
A total waste of time
My iron lung
The head shrinkers
They want everything
My uncle Bill
My Belisha beacon
The head shrinkers
They want everything
My uncle Bill
My Belisha beacon
And if you're frightened
You can be frightened
You can be, it's OK
And if you're frightened
You can be frightened
You can be, it's OK
The head shrinkers
They want everything
My uncle Bill
My Belisha beacon
One of the classic Radiohead tracks. This album epitomises The Bends and sums up everything the band were feeling at the time. The first single from 'The Bends' and the first single since Creep this song was written by Thom after the explosion of Creep and the bands world wide success. At gigs in the USA people were turning up to shows just to hear 'Creep' and would leave after it had been played. Worse still, some people would demand that the band play the song twice or three times.
My Iron Lung tears into Creep and comments on the bands resentment for the weight they had to carry with that song...the feeling that just that one song was the only reason people liked them. An iron lung, keeping the band alive.
It is an amazing track. The early lyrics for this song are worth checking out. Listening to the early version shows the song from a different angle and recreates interest if you have worn your Bends CD to bits. You can view the lyrics here.
