Sonic CD debuted for the SEGA CD in November of 1993, and was re-released for the PC in 1995.

The Story

"Sonic, where are you going now?"
Sonic the Hedgehog looked over his shoulder at Amy, the young hedgehog who was racing hot on his heels.
"To Never Lake," he called back.
"Why Never Lake?"
Sonic slowed down a little so he could explain. "Ever heard of the Little Planet?"
"Isn't that the tiny world that orbits around Mobius?" Amy asked. "The one with the special stones that alter time and change everything around them? I heard that the planet's full of places that are completely ignored by the passage of time!"
"Yeah. On the last month of every year, the Little Planet appears over Never Lake. It's that time now, and I'm going to check it out. I bet space travel will be exciting!"
"With all those Time Stones, I bet you'll try to outrun time itself!" Amy sighed.
Sonic didn't reply. He just smiled, eyes gleaming.
When they arrived at Never Lake, the Little Planet was there as expected. But something was wrong. Where there should have been tall trees and bright flowers, there was nothing but dry sand and jagged rocks. The Little Planet was tethered to a rock with a huge chain, and its surface was covered with twisted, gleaming metal.
"What happened?" Amy wondered.
Before Sonic could reply, something whooshed over them. Amy shrieked as she was snatched up, and she and her captor vanished in a blue streak of light!
"What the -- AMY!"
It didn't take long for Sonic to realize what had happened. "This has to be one of Dr. Robotnik's tricks!"
Indeed it was! Upon discovering the location of the Little Planet, the evil Dr. Robotnik and his robot cronies had immediately set about converting it to a giant fortress. When Robotnik saw Sonic approaching, he had dispatched his prize creation, the Metal Sonic, to grab Amy and lure his archenemy into danger.
"How convenient!" Robotnik crowed, bouncing about like a malicious rubber ball. "This time my scientific expertise will crush you! Once all the Time Stones are in my hands, I'll be able to manipulate time and conquer the world! HO, HO, HO, HO!"
Sonic stood on a rock and thought. Robotnik had control of the Little Planet. He had Amy, and soon he would have the Time Stones ... but not if Sonic got to them first!
His adventure on the Little Planet was going to be more exciting and dangerous than he'd planned. It was time to get a move on!

Sonic the Hedgehog #25

Summary

The Freedom Fighters discover a zone portal to the Collision Chaos Zone, which is a trap set by Robotnik. To make sure he enters, Robotnik kidnaps Sonic's biggest fan, Amy Rose! When Tails goes to investigate, he too is captured. To save them both, Sonic must face one-on-one with Robotnik's greatest creation yet, MECHA SONIC!

My Thoughts

This is THE BEST 2D Sonic game. It is #2 on my charts, right behind Sonic Adventure. This game is HUGE!! 7 levels, each with 3 Acts, and each Act has four different times (past, present, good future, and bad future. NOTE: Act 3 does have a past or present). With great Animation to open and end the game (there is even two different endings, good and bad!), and a great story, you really get into this game! Don't forget about the 7 timestones you must collect as well!!!

Good\Bad Futures
In Sonic CD, each act has a good and bad future. The bad future is full of machines and pollution, and baddies lurk everywhere. In the good future however, everything is bright, and clean, and there are no badniks at all!! How do you get the good future you ask? Well, you must go to the past, and find the robot transporter. After destroying the transporter, all machines in that level will be destroyed. Also, the bad future for that Act will now be a good future. But also be on the look out for the projector that projects Mecha Sonic attacking an animal. This scares away all the animals, so to truely make a good future, destroy this as well, and all the animals will return to the level!! But remember, if you collect all seven Timestones, the machines are destroyed automatically and its always a good future!

Palmtree Panic Zone

This, being the first level, is really easy. Just keep heading to the right, and when you get to Act 3, you will face off against Robotnik for the first time. The easiest way to defeat him is to jump up to the top left corner of the level and find the invincible (it's not that hard), and then race to the end and meet Robotnik in his walker robot. You'll have enough time to hit him three times which will send him booking. But just in case, get behind him so if your invincible wears off, he still can't get you. Now rush to the end as you must do at the end of every zone and destroy the prison full of animals? Nope, not this game, it's full of... flower seeds??? Yep, it sure is!

Collision Chaos Zone

Enter this games spring yard\casino zone. At the very beginning Amy is captured by Mecha Sonic! This level isn't incredibly hard, but be on the look out for the grasshopper robots that throw these boomerang blades at you (when you destroy them, they blades no longer hurt you). Also, be careful as spikes are everywhere in this level! In Act 3 Robotnik tries to take care of you himself, but he doesn't do a very good job of it. This is easy. Just keep flipping yourself higher and hit Robotnik's platform. He can't really hurt you, he just drops these things that push you down. Keep hitting him up until his platform smashes into the wall and he runs away like the big fat chicken he is!

Tidal Tempest Zone

It wouldn't be a Sonic game without an underwater level right? Well, Sonic CD is no different. Enter Tidal Tempest Zone. As in every other underwater level, keep reaching the surface and\or keep getting those large air bubbles to keep Sonic's lungs fully of good ol' O2. In Act 3, Robotnik becomes a little more trickier. Robotnik has a shield of air bubbles, and fires little energy balls at you. Keep dodging the balls and suck in the air bubbles whenever you can. When his "shield" is gone (or close to it) bonk him once and he blows up (they don't make those Egg-O-Matics like they use to do they?).

Quartz Quadrant Zone

Robotnik has created a huge cave while searching for the Timestones, introducing Quartz Quadrant Zone. This level doesn't have any hard badniks, but one thing it does have is spikes. Spikes, spikes everywhere! Watch out for the spikes and you'll eventually make it to Robotnik in Act 3. This time, Robotnik takes a while to kill. First thing to do is hit the pillar he is in once, causing it to fall to the ground. Now start running on the treadmill, and the friction will begin to melt away Robotnik's floor!! Dodge the big ball thats dropped from the roof, and don't fall into the spiked wall behind you and just keep running until Robotnik bails (you know your getting close when Dr. Eggman starts dancing in the pillar because his feet are hot). Now go free those poor flowers!

Wacky Workbench Zone

Wacky Workbench Zone, the most ANNOYING zone in Sonic history. This level's floor, when it begins to flash, sends you flying HIGH into the air. This gets VERY, VERY annoying when you get flying into the air at the same spot and keep getting hit by the same spikes of electric wire over, and over, and over. Be on the look out for spikes, freeze blasters (the big blue fire) that will transform you into a frozen hog-sicle, and when those twisted wires in the background start to flash, that means they're turning on, so get to somewhere where you're no touching them or you'll be fried! With a little luck, and a lot of patience, you'll get to Act 3. This is a hard and complicated boss. When you see Robotnik in his big ship doing nothing, hit him once. This will get him mad and he will fly into the air, sending big pieces of the roof he just drilled through flying at you. Dodge the big square pieces (4 always fall) and then jump on one. The ground will become electrified, and send the blocks flying into the air. As you reach the peak, you'll need to jump to a new block, as Sonic's weight has caused the one you're standing on to not go as high as the rest of them. When you jump to the new block, jump through the hole in the roof and hit Robotnik again. Repeat this pattern until you get to the very top of this room, where when you hit Robotnik again, he goes flying to a roof he can't drill through, and his ship blows up. Go destroy the flower-jail and get ready for one of the best levels in Sonic history!

Stardust Speedway Zone

This is a fast, non-stop running level. The first two acts are straight forward, just keep going right, and be on the look out for the lighting bugs that attack by connecting themselves with a ray beam. When you see a yellow sign with a blue ball on it, this is a sign which will change you between foreground and background. Act 3 is a tough one tough. You must race Mecha Sonic to the finish for Amy's life! When you first meet Mecha Sonic, and he starts to taunt you by waving his finger, be sure to charge up the super peel-out! When the door opens, let 'er rip! Keep going as fast as you can, and dodge Mecha when he's glow yellow or flashing red. One thing that helps you a lot is when you reach a big hill heading down, be sure to jump. A lot of times there are platform that you can run and jump off of to save you a lot of time. Beat Mecha to the end and the door will shut on him, causing him to crash into it! But if Mecha beats you... did I mention Robotnik is following you with a big laser that's destroying everything in its path? No? Well, he is, and if Mecha beats you, your stuck to wait for Robotnik, and to wait for your demise. After beating Mecha, and jump at Amy's bindings to free her!

Metallic Madness Zone

This is the final level in Sonic CD. It is just right-full of badniks, spikes, and shrink rays (??). Yes, there are places where normally our hero couldn't fit, until that is, he is shurnk down to mini-size. There are mazes of tubes in both Act 1 and 2 and let you chose which direction you want to go in, choosing right seems to work most of the time. Hopefully, you'll navigate yourself through Acts 1 and 2 and meet Robotnik for the last time in Act 3. This time Robotnik's Egg-O-Matic is equiped with four large blades. When he has all four, he tries to roll on you. What I always do here, is get hit on purpose, grab at least on ring, and while I'm still flashing, bop him once. That'll cause him to loose the first blade, and once that's gone, it's a whole lot easier! With three blades, he still tries to roll on you, but this time he'll stop so not to reveal his weak side. After he stops, he'll begin to fly, and as he flies, the blades rotate around him. Hit him again when his unprotected side is facing you. With only 2 blades left, he tries to fire them at you. Dodge them, and hit him when he comes low enough for you to reach. On his last blade and getting desperate, Robotnik tries to jump on you pogo-stick style! Hit him once more when he's low enough and sit back and watch a great ending!

The Special Zone
"The UFO Fields"

To enter the extremely fun bonus levels, end Acts 1 or 2 with 50 rings and hop into the big ring, just like Sonic 1. In the bonus level, run around jumping into the UFOs, and staying out of the water, as when you run in water, the time limit goes down very rapidly! When you reach 10 seconds left, you will hear a weird sound, and if you look in the middle of the course, and light blue UFO will have appeared, hit this one to get more time back! It appears every time there is 10 seconds left to so keep hitting it if you're running out of time. After collecting all 7 Timestones, there is NO Super Sonic. They just always give you a good future, and you will see the good animated ending.
