Released by Capitol Records in 1967, the "Magical Mystery Tour" album package included a booklet of photos from the movie.

Although the album was first released in the U.S. only, a two-record EP set containing six songs from the album was released in Britain in 1967. In 1976, the EP set was discontinued and replaced with the U.S. album.
