Hello

Welcome to my World of Helpful Hints

I will be doing some research and gathering some helpful hints to pass on to you. If you have any helpful hints that you would care to share with me and my readers please e-mail them to me. I would be more than happy to add them to this page.

PEONIES:
For indoor arrangements cut the flowers as soon as the buds open, leaving at least three leaves on each stem so that the plant can rebuild its strength for another year.
HOW TO GROW:
Peonies do best in cold climates, even surviving temperatures of 40° or more below zero. They can be grown in Zones 3-8 and in the West Coast area of Zone 9 where nights are cool. They flourish in well-drained soil; although they prefer full sun, they will do well in light shade, provided the area is not invaded by tree roots.
The planting hole should be about 2 feet in diameter and 1 1/2 feet deep, and the soil liberally supplemented with peat moss or leaf mold. (Do not use manure; it may make the roots rot and foster disease.) For each plant, mix a double handful of bone meal with the soil. Plant peonies in early fall. Nurseries sell three-to five-bud divisions of named varieties, which should be set so that the tops of the buds are no more than 2 inches below the surface of the soil.
In heavy clay soil plant them 1 inch deep. Shallow planting will not hurt the plants; it encourages flower production. Twice a year, in early spring and fall, sprinkle a handful of bone meal around each plant and scratch it into the soil.
Peonies usually take three to five years to attain mature size; there may be no blossoms the first year and only a few the second season. Once planted, peonies can be left to grow undisturbed indefinitely.

Grass Stained White Sneakers
I have found that using Soft Scrub with Bleach cleans the grass stains off sneakers very nicely. My husband has a bad habit of mowing the lawn in his white sneakers and this takes the grass stains off. Once you have taken the stains off, remember to wipe the sneakers down with plain water. This will get the bleach off the sneakers so that it does not eat through the leather.
Also, a little dab of this with a sponge on a stained white blouse or shirt works very well before laundering the shirt.

Thanks for stopping by.
Next time I will put on a pot of coffee and bake a cake.
