Escorting VELLA GULF,
Lowry received four battle stars
for service in world war II
Originally DD-345 (SEE PHOTO) PREBLE was redesignated miscellaneous auxiliary vessel AG-99 on June 5, 1945 She was assigned to duty escorting aircraft carriers engaged in training, acting as anti-submarine patrol vessel and plane guard during flight operations. She reached Guam with Vella Gulf (CVE-111) 20 July, subsequently escorting Vella Gulf to Okinawa.

The last CVE on active duty. After receiving three battle stars for service in WW II Card was placed out of commission in reserve on May 13, 1946. Reclassified CVHE-11 in 1955 Card returned to active service in May 1958 with Military Sea Transport Service. Card was reclassified twice more to CVU-11 and finally to AKV-40 on May 7, 1959. With a civilian crew Card was used to ferry troops and planes to Vietnam throughout the 1960's.In 1964 a bomb blast sunk Card while she was moored at a Saigon dock she was quickly re-floated , repaired and back to work AKV-40 USNS CARD was sold for scrap September 12, 1970. |
