Highly recommended. Age Of Propaganda, The Everyday Use And Abuse Of Persuasion by Anthony Pratkanis and Elliot Aronson, Copyright 1992; Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 91-25616; W.H. Freeman and Company, New York. This book is a detailed guide to the various techniques of persuasion that is flooding our lives. Using the government, political campaigns, advertisers and the mass media as examples of sources, the authors discuss the mechanisms of changing peoples beliefs and attiutdes regardless if the message is valid or not. |

Highly recommended The Politics of Nonvoilent Action by Gene Sharp, Copyright 1973; Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 72-95483; Extending Horizons Books, Porter Sargent Publisher; 11 Beacon St., Boston, Ma. 02108. A three volume set of books with the subtitles of Power and Struggle, The Methods of Nonviolent Action, and The Dynamics of Nonviolent Action devoted to the view that no government can exist without the support of the people. Even oppressive governments must have the support of the majority and do so by inducing helplessness on the population as a whole. The book outlines methods of nonviolent political action where the majority can always influence or even topple a government. |

Highly recommended Learned Optimism, by Martin E.P. Seligman, Ph.D., Copyright 1990, Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 91-34235; Alfred A Knopf, Inc., 201 East 50th Street, New York, N.Y. 10022. Martin Seligman is the leading researcher into the psychological phenomena of "Learned-Helplessness". He also was among the first to disprove the theories of radical behaviorism. Learned-Helplessness is where a person has the means and ability to address a problem but acts helpless because he believes that he his helpless. Learned Optimism is a detailed explanation of how helplessness is induced into the human mind and how a perosn can avoid learning helplessness or after becoming helpless, reverse the process and become self-enabling. |

These three above recommendations are the information sources that opened my eyes to a serious social issue and lead me to write the document that I titled The Mass Conditioning Of Helplessness. Click on the title if you would like to read it, though I advise that you be prepared to download it for convience. It's a lot of text.

Dancing the Dream, the Seven Sacred Paths of Human Transformation, by Jami Sams, Copyright 1998 Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 97-52607, HarperCollins Publishers, 10 East 53rd Street, New York, NY 10022. While I found a couple of paragraphs hard to believe it is an excellent book for guiding yourself through "enlightenment traps" which are a spiritual variation of "rationalization traps" which are defined on my logic definition page. It is a book that you will want to keep for life as each time you complete a spiritual circuit in your life you will want to reread it or at least refer back to it from the new perspective to catch the previously unrecognizable meanings to her words.
One of my favorite authors is Tom Brown Jr., Master Tracker and survival instructor. I have read a number of his books and intend to read them all. While I don't agree with his accessment of the use of logic, his stories and instructions are quite enjoyable and educational. I have read The Tracker, Copyright 1978 ISBN 0-425-10133-9 The Quest, Copyright 1991 ISBN 0-425-12660-9 The Way Of The Scout, Copyright 1995 ISBN 0-425-14779-7 The Science And Art Of Tracking, Copyright 1999 ISBN 0-425-15772-5 Berkley Publishing Group, 375 Hudson Street, New York, N.Y. 10014, Member of Penguin Putnam Inc. I just finished reading The Journey, Copyright 1992 ISBN 0-425-13364-8 and I am now reading Awakening Spirits, Copyright 1994 ISBN 0-425-14140-3. The Journey streach my lattitude of acceptance with Tom's claim of having transported himself from one physical location to another through the spirit world. I also strongly disagree with his use of the term logic. I have found logic to be a very powerful tool for truth finding and spirituality. However, semantics aside I do agree with most everything else he says. I underlying simplicity of the spirituality he promotes makes perfect sense to me. Coyote Medicine by Lewis Mehl-Madrona, M.D. Copyright 1997, published by Scribner, 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New York, N.Y. 10020, Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 96-32714, ISBN 0-684-80271-6 (hc). An excellent book about Lewis Mehl-Madrona's experience combining shamanism and modern medicine. It contains several Native American mythical stories and descriptions of shamanistic healings. Rich in detail, it is good reading for anyone interested in making modern medicine more sensative to the spiritual state of the pateint or Native American religion.
Secrets of Shamanism, Tapping The Spirit Power Within You, Jose Stevens, Ph.D. and Lena S. Stevens, Copyright 1988, Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 88-91497, ISBN 0-380-75607-2, Avon Books, A Division of The Hearst Corporation, 1350 Avenue of the Americas, New York, N.Y. 10019. Self psychoanalysis in the form of shamanism. It has a heavy use of visualization but is basically saying the same thing asTom Brown Jr. but is much more ritualized. Well written and good information for anyone investigating modern shamanism.

The Writer's Journey, Mythic Structure For The Storyteller & Screenwriters by Christopher Vogler, Micheal Wiese Productions, 11288 Ventura Boulevard, Suite #821, Studio City, Ca. 91604. Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 92-37885, ISBN 0-941188-13-2. Presented as a manual for successful story plot construction, it also is the story of the path of one's life . It is the hero's journey broken down into basic steps whether he is taking out the garbage or on a quest to save the world. Within each of us is a hero and this book is his story.
The Hero With A Thousand Faces, by Joseph Campbell, Copyright 1949, Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 49-8590, ISBN 0-691-01784-0 Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey. The great classic. The Writer's Journey is simpler, more readable form of this book.
How To Argue And Win Every Time, by Gerry Spence, Copyright 1995, Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 94-43552, ISBN 0-312-11827-9, St. Martin's Press, 175 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10010. Gerry Spence is a flamboyant trail lawyer from Jackson, Wyoming. The first part of this book is a very good description of dispute resolution techniques. The last half of the book is Gerry's soapbox. Although I disagree with his put down of logic, after all being a personal injury lawyer after huge settlements it helps to get a jury to run away with emotion, his other methods of getting agreement is worth the read.
Native American Prophecies by Scott Peterson, copyright 1990, Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 90-7793, Paragon House, 370 Lexington Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017. While the only prophecy I found believable were that of Sun Bear and it was based mostly on common sense, it is invaluable for it relatively short synopsis of history. Well written and pleasurable it does have it's shocking descriptions such as the 80,000 people sacrificed by the Aztecs that created a river of blood.
Astral Odyssey, by Carol Eby, Copyright 1996, Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 96-1949, Samuel Weiser, Inc. P.O. Box 612, York Beach, ME 03910-0612. I read this one shortly after I start having astral projections or out-of-body experiences. Eby's sources make up for her lack of credentials. After comparing her book to several other ones she came across as the most serious and least flakey of them all. In fact I would say she isn't flakey in the least. She has a done excellent research and offers a good set of definitions for all the various stages of sleep.
Retelling A Life, Narration And Dialouge In Psychoanalysis by Roy Schafer, Ph.D. Copyright 1992, BasicBooks, A Division of HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. 10 East 53rd Street, New York, N.Y. 10022-5299. An analysis of the relationship between patient and psychotherapist. An extensive discussion of transference and counter transference. Hard dang guy to read besides Kant. Not easy reading but if you are into the details of psychoanalysis it has good information.

A Laurel Book, Dell Publishing; Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, Inc., 1540 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10036; Copyright 1964, ISBN 440-35183-9. The classic book on the Jungian veiw of psychic symbolisms of the human mind. The last book the is associated with Carl Jung.
Trail Of Tears, The Rise And Fall Of The Cherokee Nation, by John Ehle, Copyright 1988, Library of Congress Card Catalog Number 88-1386, ISBN 0-385-23954-8, An Anchor Book, published by Doubleday, a Division of Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group, Inc., 666 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10103. The history of the Cherokee People until 1842. Counter to the popular conception that the Trail of Tears was a single massive movement of the Cherokee, it details the United States Government's efforts a moving the Cherokee over several attempts. Some were transported by barge up the river, others left before the famous march. John Ross recklessly fought against the movement and cost the Cherokee People valuable time. The very first to move west did so years before the famous Trail of Tear march which was actually overseen by the Cherokee leadership, and establish a solid Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. The starvation was due mostly to poor planning and disease mostly to unsanitary condtions from poor preparation. Many Cherokee just walked away from the march and disappeared into the surrounding lands.
