The Czar and his family were celebrating the 300 year anniversary of the Romanov's Dynasty. It should have been a happy occasion, but for little Anastasia it was not. Her beloved grandmother Empress Marie was soon to leave them to go to Paris. Sensing Anastasia's sadness the Empress gave her a special gift, a music box, on the key was inscribed the words, "together in Paris". It was a dream for both of them, but it was a dream that was not to be.
An evil monk named Rasputin appeared and with him came the Russian revloution. He wanted to kill all of the royal family, but a kitchen boy named Dimitri prevented it by helping the Empress Marie and little Anastasia escape. The rest of the family were not so lucky and when Anastsia became seperated from the Empress she was forced to live her childhood in an orphanage.
Ten years pass and Anastasia, now 18 is sent from the orphanage to make her own way in the world. Memories of her life before the orphanage are faded. All she has is the key to the music box from long ago, so she decides to go to Paris to look for her past. Just before starting her journey she meets Dimitri and Vladimir, two men that convince her she is the lost Princess Anastasia. Dimitri had the lost music box and only wanted to collect the reward, he didnt know that this young woman was the real Anastasia.
When Anastasia finally meets the Empress Marie she is asked many questions. Valdimir has coached her well, but it is the recounting of her escape that not only convinces Marie, but also Dimitri that she is the true Anastasia.
Dimitri realizes that he has fallen in love with Anastasia and with this new found knowledge, he decides to leave Anastasia's life forever, knowing now that she is a real princess he thinks that she could never love a mere kitchen boy.
Empress Marie decides the time is right for Anastasia to take her place in society as her grandaughter and prepares her to be introduced to Paris. Unknown to either of them though, the evil Rasputin has heard of Anastasia's survival and vows to finish the job he started so long ago.
Just before the ceremony begins Anastasia takes a walk in the garden where she is surprised by the evil Rasputin. Death seems certain as she bravely faces him, but suddenly Dimitri appears as he did many years ago. He kills the monk and once again Anastasia's life is spared.

Anastasia and Dimitri leave Paris. Having found out who she really is and once again being reunited with her beloved grandmother, Anastasia begins a new journey, a path that she will follow hand in hand with Dimitri.

This wonderful Disney movie was based on the real life princess Anastasia Romanov. As all childrens movies should, this one had a happy ending. Anastasia Romanov's story did not have a happy ending and to this day what really happened to her remains a mystery to all.
