The Kalakala

November 9th, 1998

On Friday November 6th, 1998, The ferry "Kalakala" returned to Seattle. The Kalakala was in ferry service in Seattle up till thirty years ago. It was then converted to a fish processor and put into service in Alaska. It was later abandoned and sat in the mud up in Alaska for several years till it was discovered again. The Kalakala is known for its art deco design, very unlike modern ferries of today.

The kalakala currently is docked at the Bell Street Pier and is undergoing inspections and marine safty checks. It will be open to the public for tours after next tuesday. The admission will be $8.00 for adults and $7.00 for children. Tickets will be available at The Odyssey Maritine Discovery Center. The proceeds will benefit the Kalakala Restoration and The Odyssey Visiting Vessel Program.

If you would like to volunteer with the restoration of the Kalakala, you may call The Kalakala Foundation at 206-632-0540.
