Innocence Discarded

Once carefree and young,
A bellyful of promises
Now turned to dread,
She stares unseeing at the window,
Caked in dust and dirt.
Squeezing a grey sponge,
The trickles of water strip away streaks of silt.
She squashes it slowly
Against the window,
Sending a stream of water
Splashing down.
The glass beneath does not gleam,
But hides behind the lurking darkness.
Dropping it with a splat,
She moves to the counter.
Absentmindedly, she palms the heavy knife,
Inspecting the gleaming edge,
Sharp as her husband's tongue.
In the next room,
A baby's voice screams,
Clamouring for attention.

I'm coming, my love.
I'm coming.
