Flowering

Unfolding
Piece by piece,
Exploding in extravagance
Like a Soho woman,
Proudly displaying her brightly painted faces -
And then complete,
Solid as concrete,
Delicate as butterfly wings.
Perfection discoloured,
Distilled essence of nature,
Vulnerable in a swarm of ardent admirers
Sucking away the life-blood of her friends
Who point at her,
Mocking her purity.

Gone with the wind
As night falls.
Darkness engulfs the world with its heavy blankets,
Predators hiding away in their cocoons.
Tears and wash-water mix on tired leaves.
Colour leeching out
As she lays down to sleep
In deference to her children.
