The Worlds...
There have been three Snakeboarding
world Championships to date. In 1994 the first World Championships were
held in Guernsey, off the coast of England. It was the first time that
pro riders from around the world including the USA, UK, Germany & South
Africa were able to compete on an international level, demonstrating their
various skills.
Jay Beatty of the USA became the first World Champion pulling off smooth airs and the first 720 in Snakeboarding history, Ashley Morgan (South Africa) and Ingo Fohre (Germany) also made their mark on an international level and set the standard for future contests in the sport. The 1995 World Championships were held in the Olympic Hall in Munich, Germany. Riders from Spain, Germany, South Africa, Austria, Switzerland and the USA participated. The growth in the sport could be seen in this contest by the number of competitors and the progression of their skills. Ingo Fohre (Germany) grabbed the title with some daring and exciting tricks. The 1996 World Championships held in London, England were the best ever. The ramps and skating area were top class and featured big quarter pipes, mini ramps, launch ramps, grinding rails and of course vert. Sponsors had also entered the fray and included BK, Cherry Coke, Fosters, MTV's Blah-Blah-Blah, and Sony Playstation. The whole event rocked, riders from Germany, USA, the UK & South Africa met up to put their best tricks together and completely rip... |

and the finals on the last day. Riders pushed themselves to the extreme
with back flips, front flips, 720's, back side 360's, ally-oop front side
feeble grinds and more.
With an entry of 80 riders, The Sunday finals had been narrowed down to Rob & Pete Nye (USA), Kelly Dean (USA), Jay Beatty (USA), Andy Cass (USA), Ingo Fohre (Germany), Iain Calvert (UK) and Marc Churchill (UK). Rob Nye took first place in air and style with his clean ass corkscrew backflip over the whole fun box - nobody could believe it. Mini ramp was won by Iain Calvert, and Kelly Dean took first in street with his smooth style and fat backside 360's. Last but not least, vert was won by the new world champion Rob Nye. The final icing on the cake was a party, sponsored by FOSTERS where the trophy awards were handed out and the Pro riders could finally relax and get to know the beautiful English ladies in attendance at the event. A fine time was had by all... |
