Piazza
Navona, Rome There is always something going on here, in Rome's most beautiful piazza. Three wonderful fountains, two by Bernini, highlight this Baroque piazza. The first fountain is the Fontana del Moro. In the middle is the Fontana dei Fiumi (with the large obelisk). At the far end (not seen) is the Fontana di Nettuno. The church on the left is the Sant'Agnese in Agone, built in 1652 on the site of a brothel, where in AD304 the St Agnes was exposed naked to force her to renounce her faith. In the Miracle of St. Agnes, her hair grew and fell around her body to protect her modesty. She was then martyred on this site. |
