In Republican times, Ostia was the main commercial port of Rome, it's military base defended the coastline and the mouth of the Tiber.

Ostia was buried for centuries and therefore remarkably preserved. One can walk around the town, through the houses and shops, and sit in this completely preserved theater, which holds about 4000 people.
