Sabah achieved independence on 31 August 1963 and joined the federation of Malaysia on 16 September 1963 as a sovereign state that practices parliamentary democracy.
Under the State Constitution, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri acts as the Head of State but only holds certain executive powers. The state administration is done by the State Cabinet, Sabah State Legislative Assembly and State Public Services Department.
Currently there are 11 Ministries in Sabah that oversees several government agencies and statutory bodies.
The Federal Government has control over several aspects in the State Government. The Federal departments involved in the state development include the Education, Health, Geology, Public Aviation and Telecommunications departments.
