Atmospheric Conditions
Chow Lin was happy, very happy. He had just been contracted
to design the defenses around the Mafia’s newest pet project in Italy.
He was also the person who had people inside the Federation to see whether
they had any inkling of what was going to happen to them. “Will you
be needing anything right now, sir. Because if you don’t, I would
like to get ready for our departure,” said Wi Gao, his private secretary.
“Just my designs which I will get myself.”
“Very well, sir.”
He called up the designs on his laptop, making sure nothing was
wrong. He then stepped from his office and walked down the stairs
to his waiting 1929 Model ‘J’ Deusenberg. He stepped into the car
and drove off to the airport, unaware that there was a homing device on
the chassis of his car...

Somewhere in the mountains…
Erisi had always loved mountains, but these mountains were tough
hiking, nearly always a steep incline to climb up or down. She was
a SEAL and so never complained, but she wondered how far it was until they
reached the point where they were going. “Leftannant, how far till we make
base camp?”
As he was about to answer, an older model MiG-29 roared overhead,
obviously coming into land, since its landing gear was extended. “By the
looks of that fighter, around one or two kilometers. The markings
on that MiG looked like Mafia.”
“O.K. So you think that these places are controlled by the Mafia?”
she asked, her expression suddenly going dark.
“I wouldn’t put it by them. They are rather fierce people,”
commented Mara.
“I smell skullduggery afoot,” pronounced one of the SEAL team
members.
They trudged on, thinking that the primary defenses would be immediately
on the buildings. They had thought wrong. They ran into a specialized
version of the Phalanx Close-in Weapons System or CIWS. As the Phalanx
began to fire a thousand rounds a minute, they threw themselves to the
ground, opening fire with their MP-10s. As they tracked its movement,
one of the SEALs crept up to the Phalanx and planted a grenade in its base.
The unit blew sky high and started a fire. They quickly put the fire
out, knowing they might be discovered if they let it burn. Knowing
they might run into another one of those units, they proceeded to make
base camp.
As the SEAL team set camp, Erisi and Mara crawled up to the enemy
base. What they saw was astounding. Concrete bunkers were everywhere,
and squads of men paraded up and down the perimeter. They saw twelve
MiGs lined up on the tarmac. This was going to be a tough nut to
crack, Mara thought.
Erisi started to move forward. “Hey, Erisi, stop! Come
back!” Mara whispered as loudly as she dared. She then started to
move forward herself, forgetting about the danger of penetrating the compound
without the SEALs. They were now at the fence going completely around
the compound. The squad had just passed their position, so they jumped
the fence and ran to the first of the bunkers. They got lucky and
got the command bunker, for it had the command pad to destroy the station.
They opted for a five-minute silent countdown and ran as if the old guy
with the scythe was chasing them. On the way, Mara gunned for the
planes to try to knock them out so they couldn’t destroy the team from
the air. Unfortunately she missed the business jet. Erisi covered
her back, cutting down squad after squad of people. Mara ran out
of rounds first, then Erisi fired at the heads of the remaining six people
taking four of them out. They were all out of rounds and had forgotten
to bring their Colt .45s with them. All of a sudden, a grenade blew
the last two of the guards to smithereens. The SEALs had heard the
gunfire and fearing the worst, ran down to rescue them. As they reached
base camp, a Gulfstream V flew overhead. A few seconds later, the
enemy compound blew up. TO BE CONTINUED... |
