![]() I read an article somewhere recently asking whether people thought pop music was worse than it used to be. Almost everyone said "yes". I agree. Music producers, like so many other people in the entertainment industry these days, have gotten lazy. This means that as soon as they hear a demo tape from another band who sounds exactly the same as their current one-album wonders they'll sign them up straight away, with little comedy pound signs in their eyes. Because almost all of the music that kids are hearing as they grow up now is this formulaic plap this is the sound that they're used to, and so the only music they buy when they get to that "music buying" age. Hence the charts are now filled with an unlimited number of boy and girl bands, by-the-numbers R&B stars, generic gansta rap artists, boring dance producers, and the rest. I mean, I know it's not the fault of the kids, who know no better, but just fast-forward twenty years 'till they're in the fun-pubs of the future, which are having nostalgic "late 90's" nights. A song comes on, and people get visably excited. They remember it. It was good (they think). But who was it by? Boyzone? 911? 5ive? N-Sync (or whatever they're called)? Who could honestly blame them for not remembering? I could go on and on (and usually do), but I can't be bothered. It's a hopeless situation, fuelled by human greed, and I can't see it ending in a long time.
