Tablero
Tablero is a board game that I learned
in the Society for Creative Anachronism. The rules are simple and play
is easy. The game is a lot of fun but NEVER play with hard alcohol as this
can lead to severe intoxication and possible alcohol poisoning.
Equipment:
1 Tablero board (shown at the
bottom of the page)
2 dice (preferably designed
for Tablero also shown at bottom of page)
7 shot glasses (the fancier
the better, but make sure they are not fragile)
1 opponent
2 cans/bottles/other of your
favorite beverage (usually beer)
Object:
Drink your opponents beer. All
of it. Keep your own beer from being drunk.
Play:
Each player places three glasses
on their base line and the remaining glass is placed in the center of the
board. Each player rolls one die and the high roller has the choice of
playing first. If they choose to play, they fill the center glass and roll
the dice, otherwise the dice are passed to the other player who must fill
the center glass.
Both dice are rolled and one glass
moved for each die (i.e. a 5 and a 3 are rolled, one glass is moved 5 spaces
and the other is moved three) All moves are vertical and the object is
to line up are least five glasses. Five is an acceptable line however it
is considered honorable to line up at least six before drinking. I prefer
to hold out for all seven. When a line is made the person who made the
line must drink at least half of the glasses lined up (the rest may be
passed to spectators or the opponent) and place them on the opponent's
base line where the opponent then fills them.
At the beginning of the game a
lady is asked to roll the dice for the Queen's number. Whatever number
she rolls is, thereafter for the rest if the game, known as the Queen's
number. Everytime that number is rolled, the player who's rolled it is allowed to pick a
glass from the board and drink it. Their opponent is required then to fill
the glass and the roller places it wherever they wish on the board then takes
their moves and rolls again.
Play continues until a 7, 11, or
12 is rolled. the dice are then passed to the opponent.
Should one player run out of beer
(or whatever you are using) and their opponent forms a line that they are
not able to then fill they are declared the loser and the winner then distributes
the glasses however they might like and a toast is drunk. Local tradition
says that the toast must first be to the King and Queen ("whoever they
may be"), second, to the worthless opponent (ad lib), and third to themselves
(however they want to describe themselves). More can be added.
Matters of courtesy and honor:
The line that wins the game should
always be all seven glasses (if you want to go for style finish the game
with the chevron formation)
It is considered honorable to take
a line of no less than six glasses unless you are losing badly.
Playing out of turn occasionally
happens(especially after the first few games) and it is perfectly allright
to let your opponent know if they are playing on your turn however quibbling
about it is not honorable. Just have fun.
One is considered skunked if they
are out of beer and their opponent has not opened their second bottle/can/other.
The board:
Note:
In some localities the rules may vary slightly... there are always gonna
be some descrepancies.. if people in your area who play tablero play a
litle differently... well.. when in Rome... hope you enjoy playing...
Take me home!
