Weird? Unwearable?
Over-the-top? The modernists have often been accused of
being so. However without their exquisitely structured
designs (imagine them as architects of fabric and its use
of colour and shape), fashion, and people's way of
thinking, will always be stuck in the rut. So we need someone to offer something new, something which just sparks off a praise of 'Genius!', someone who pushes and challenges the way we see clothes, in short, we need a modernist designer. While others may differ in opinion on my selection and consider the British designers as being modernists, I would consider the Brits more as being experimentalists. But the designers I have chosen are not the be-all and end-all of the modernists designers. Other designers I would consider as being modernists are: Junya Watanabe, Dries van Noten, and to some extent, Brits like Alexander McQueen (in his pre-Givenchy days),and the Japanese cohort of led by Issey Miyake (his crimped fabric). |
