1997 Devitt Open

This was the last of the 36 hole tourneys, and the year of the famous slippery rock-broken thumb-play anyway incident.  Tom built a 13 stroke lead on the first day at Golf Club of Illinois with an 89.  His lead increased at Cantigny until the 16th hole, where he took a stance upon a wet rock in order to hit his ball out of a creek bed.  Pat and Lee saw his head disappear below the horizon as the ball flew upward.  Tom had dislocated his thumb and was pleading for relief from the pain and the match.  Pat and Lee, in the true spirit of the Open, insisted that he finish or forfeit.  Tom double bogied the par 3 17th  with a one handed tee shot, and took a max out 8 on the 18th to win by 16 with a 189.
