Ah Wai is the only Hong Kong person in the group of friends in Hong Kong. In many ways I find him the greatest mystery. With him, I feel a bond of friendship yet I must confess I fail to read his thoughts. He thinks in a different language, and has a different set of grundnorms.
Whenever I speak to him, I feel compelled to speak in Cantonese, thereby running very quickly into a brick wall because of my limited vocabulary. Still. I have startled him many a time with my repertoire of Cantonese slang and swearing.

He is a person I could really hate:
After enough years of Engineering he decided on a career change. He took his MBA from NYU (hey - if you are going to do it, you might as well do it in style...) Well - if nothing else, being away from Hong Kong, in the USA will truly be a good learning experience for him. He seems to like it there, so I don't know where he will end up next! |
