I think this grew up in a way from Annie's principle as well: we realized that we were not as close to some as to others, but these guys were all still friends. The only way to explain it was to adopt a concentric rings approach, for many are still friends though not as close. And the categories are not rigid: friends move among rings as time goes by. Some become closer, and some alas…move away…
