Dazzling KIT |
I was waiting for my flight at HongKong's Chek Lup Kok Airport when I first listened to Kit's maiden release under her new label. Somehow, the rainy Saturday
afternoon and the ultra-modern, nearly deserted terminal
seemed like the logical backdrop to Kit's ultra-dramatic title track. A brilliant tune composed by Chen Hsiao Juen, it's the perfect showcase for Kit's vocal
pyrotechnics and emotive firepower.
Her vibratos, falsettos et al were all in excellent working order, but for once, Kit doesn't try to out-do the material at hand. It's arguably her best song since her first-ever hit, 'Heartache'. Unfortunately, the rest of the album, while largely competent, struggles to sustain such a powerhouse curtain-raiser. Kit singes in such a way that suggests that she's deeply in love with her own voice and techniques - her narcissism tends to overshadow the feel and finesse she's otherwise capable of. This complaint aside, Dazzling nonetheless qualifies as one of Kit's more outstanding albums in recent memory. Louis Sung |
