Being the Hero
(c)2002, Phillip Smith
There I stood, sweat dripping down
How I got there, I couldn't recall
All I knew is that it was up to me
To get us out of here, get us all
The others had fled, too scared to stay
But I had made a promise when we left home
I said I'd come back with as many as I could
To leave these people behind is to myself disown
And I find myself being the hero
I find myself being the leader
I find myself being the hero
I only thought it would be sweeter
I gritted my teeth and started the charge
Hoping to lead everyone to safety
This is nothing like what I'd read or dreamed
Being the hero isn't looking so nice lately
But my word is my word, and I never back away
Even if it means I'll do this to my grave
I'll get them home, I'll see them from here
With God at my side, a safe path I'll pave
And I find myself being the hero
I find myself being the leader
I find myself being the hero
I only thought it would be sweeter
Now we're almost there, I can hear the sounds of freedom
The people I led are close at my heels
A sharp pain blossoms in my chest, I stumble
So this is how being a hero feels
And I found myself being the hero
I found myself being the leader
I found myself being the hero
I only thought it would be sweeter
And I found myself being the hero
I found myself being the leader
I found myself being the hero
I only thought it would be sweeter
