Snowboarding Timeline
- 1963- Tom Sims in makes his first "skiboard" for a project in eighth grade in New Jersey.
- 1965- Sherman Poppen makes the Snurfer for his kids by bolting 2 skis together.
- 1969- Mike Doyle makes the monoski which is a forerunner to the alternative ski concept.
- 1970- inspired by sliding on cafeteria trays in upstate New York, east coast surfer Dimitrije Milovich starts making snowboards. He claims that the boards had metal edges which is 15 years before they were believed to have been used.
- 1971- Milovich is given a patent for his snowboards so he can sell them to the ski companies. The patent doesnt end till 1988. Then he declines from enforcing the patent with other ocmpanies.
- 1969-1972- Bob Webber spends several years trying to get a patent for his early year "skiboard" design. He gets the pattent in 1972. Later he sells it to Jake Burton Carpenter on August 17, 1980.
- 1975- Dimitrije Milovich establishes Winterstick Snowboards in Utah. The metal edges that were on his earlier boards were taken off. He also makes a swallowtail board based on the same design as in surfboards.
- 1977- Mike Olson builts his first snowboard in his junior high woodshop. He keeps makeing and changing his boards and in 1984 he starts GNU Snowboards.
- from then on out snowboarding has just happened and has been getting more and more popular.
