Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA)
Conjugated Linoleic Acid is a nutrient that occurs naturally in a wide
variety of foods, particularly beef and dairy products. Lab studies with
animals and CLA have shown it to be an anti-carcinogen with anti-catabolic
effects. Of special interest to bodybuilders is that CLA has been
shown to inhibit lipoprotein lipase, an enzyme which breaks down fat gobules
in the blood so that adipocyte (fat cell) uptake, or body fat accumulation,
can occur. The inhibitation of lipoprotein lipase results in reduced fat
deposition. CLA also increases hormone sensitive lipase activity, an enzyme
which breaks down fats stored in fat cells on the bocy. The fatty acids
are returned to the blood stream to be used as an energy source for muscle
cells. In plain English, CLA directs the body to use fat reserves for
energy. CLA also has powerful antioxidant properties.
