Stories of the Week

Boy where to start or what to tell.......... Heck I will nod at the gate and what the heck.

I have seen some great times and some sad times but would never ever change the life that I have had! Yes Broken bones and stitches are a part of it but the real gems are the people and the life's you touch on your way through! I have to tell you there are some real thinkers and some stinkers........ but I love being a cowboy! Is there any other way! I want to share a story that will put a smile upon your face...... and make you thing hmmmm this guy has no taste! Just remember most cowboys are jokers and will spin you a yarn rather than tell you the simple truth! Color is the name of the game with most......... you better think quick cuz they will keep you on your toes!

The day was much like any other with a 100 things to do but like always if some one called I was never too busy to lend a hand. Pat a good friend of mine is a farrier and he rings me on the phone and asks me to stop by the kill yard and pick up some hoofs to show the class he was teaching. I only wanted maybe 4 but one of the guys thought it funny to load me up several more! I can not even begin to tell you how many they put in there but if I said a lot........ that would be fair! I was running late that day and forgot they were back there and needed some feed so stopped by my local store. I know all the boys well and there is always a story or two to tell or a joke that no one has heard........ We got to chatting and they introduced me to Josh a young man that was just hired on. They were all teasing him about being a city boy and not use to hard work, and I told him if he wanted to he could come help me shoe a few horses when he gets through for I could surely use some help! He was worn out to say the least but managed to smile and say no thanks. I told Josh I would buy him a soda if he loaded the feed in the back of my truck. I ribbed Mike and told him to follow my lead! The boy opened the gate and his eyes got really big and he jumped back and Hollered as he froze in his tracks! Now by this time several other customers had gathered around wondering what had happened. Mike walks over and puts his hand on Josh's shoulder and with a straight face asked me what was up with all the legs. I told him as I shook my head ..... "Yea this new fangled way of shoe N horses is strange, they give me the feet and I put shoes on them! then I take them back the next day for them to sew em back on!" "The hard part is figurin how to match them all up......gives all new meaning to having two left feet!" And you thought socks were hard to match! One woman gasped, grabbed her husband and took off! One guy stopped me and asked how this worked..........I said OK......... I guess but I never see the same horse twice.

Josh was shell shocked and even after I told him the truth but he would not even go close to my truck!

The moral to this story is "cows may come and cows may go but the bull goes on forever"

Hope this story is not too much for the readers! (smiles)

People say cowboys are heart breakers and that Bullriders are the worst. Well, I now can say that this is not true. I earlier this year met the man of my dreams, and get this, he's a bullrider. I've dated 2 other bullriders and they broke my heart. But he's different. The others just wanted a Bucklebunny to have fun with and then be off down the road to another rodeo. But not Jason, he really loves me. People say, "Oh, then he must not be that good of a bullrider then." Actually, he's one of the best in Florida. He'll even be riding PBR this year. Everyone calls him "Little Lane" on the rodeo road. He's just has so much natural ability. Just like Lane Frost. I have recently discovered that Cowboys are the greatest men on earth. Now, Jason and I rodeo together. He bullrides and I barrel race. So ladies, look out for cowboys, they know how to steal your heart away

hi! my name is kirsten, i'm in the 8th grade and live in sunny florida! i am also Jr. Miss Rodeo Florida. my dad is (well was) a bullrider so i've grown up around rodeo my whole life. and my mom ran barrels. bullridin is one of my favorite events! pretty much all of my friends are bullriders! LoL but i have seen pretty much every type of accident you can imagine. one of our really good friends was paralyzed. i remember it too. i was about 5 years old when it happened. i'm not going to get into details but it was bad. he was paralyed about the same time christopher reeve was. he was in his 20's when it happened. they traveled all over the u.s. goin to bullridings.

this is my last year in jr. rodeo but last season (04-05) I was the Sr. All Around Champion Cowgirl, Reserve Champion Pole Bender, Reserve Champion Goat Tyer, and was 4th in barrels. this was overall if you didnt know. i remember one accident i had was when i was tyin goats at a rodeo in Lake City and if you dont know...in this event (goat tyin) you have a goat staked out at the end of the arena, you run your horse to the goat and dismount (i dismount while my horse Shorty is still running!), then you have to run up to the goat (remember its staked out on a rope), flank it, gather three of its legs, and tie it! anyways, i ran my horse down to the stake, dismounted and when i flanked the goats legs hit me in the face and i tied in 14 seconds but messed up on the tie. after i tied it, i realized i had gotten a bloody nose. eww, nasty, hate it but it makes ya tough. LoL recently in goats when i dismounted...my horse stepped on my ankle and it when down into the dirt and twisted! it hurt soooo bad...i had to keep goin so while i was tyin i had tears streamin down my face cuz i swear it felt like it was broke! after i was done they announced my time which ended up being a 12.2!!! that was the most painful tie i had ever done! i've been stepped on, kicked, fell face first into the dirt, and pretty much everything that can happen in this event LOL my fastest time was a 9.8 practicin but at a rodeo it was a 10...

just today i was runnin barrels at a NBHA and turned my first barrel too tight and my knee hit the rim and knocked it over and now my knee is all black and blue and skinned up.

i also started to break-a-way rope (my favorite event) this year. a few weekends ago i roped my calf in 4 seconds and wouldve been faster but my horse wouldnt stop and i wouldnt been like a 3.

i have tons of different stories about rodeo and ridin and stuff like that but dont have enough time to put some more. some include gettin run off with, gettin kicked in the shoulder, back, leg, wrist and all of these would have been my head but i managed to jump out of the way a lil or jump uo (kicked in the back).

if anyone wants to email me about anything to do with rodeo, ridin, or horses in general..just put in the subject box "question/comment/info/talk/other about horses/rodeo/ridin/other" just pick one that corresponds to your email so i know its not junk mail. thanks

Hey yall my name is kayce and i am a very proud sister of a bullridin brother. i have so many stories i could tell you. like about a month ago my brother fractured one of the ribs behind his heart. we didnt know this at first but i could see it in his eyes the pain and hurt. he could barely get up it hurt him so bad. i about died right where i stood. i had tears running down my cheeks. i couldn't bare to lose to him. im only 14. ill always be to young to lose him. i thought to my self. as the clowns run to save him from the bull my brother trys to move. in pain he crawls to the side of the arena. the finally get the bull out of the arena which seemed like forever. they check him out and send to the hospital. we waited for what seemed like hours as the doctors checked him out. they said that he was just going to be sore for a while. they didnt see the rib because of his heart. we didnt think much about it till my brother said he was still hurting so my mom took him to our doctor. they looked and studied to x ray forever and finally saw the fracture. he told my brother that it my be 2 weeks for it to heal or it may be 6 weeks. he didnt know for sure. i saw my brother as i heard the doctor tell the news he had tears in his eyes. he knew that his bull ridin day were over for this school year. it broke my heart to see him like that. i dont want him to do it but its what he loves and im not going to stop him. i will support him till the day i die. well its been great. bye love COWBOYS always. kayce

CODI I LOVE U SO MUCH!!! thanks for being my brother. couldnt ask for a better one.

I'm 14 and involved in rodeo. I live in KY and last year, I went to a practice in Bourborville to ride bulls for my first time. They put me on a cow (Warpaint) for my first time. Well, I didn't know much or have any equiptment so I borrowed some. I got down in the chutes, took some tips, and prayed. I was ready, I said"OK boys lets go." I rode her for about 6 seconds and then came off to the left with my feet up in the air. She bucked and came down on me. I didn't know I had been stepped on. I got my rope and went back on the chutes. I was starting to shake and I found out I was hurt. We went to the hostpital and come to find out, I had been cut very badly. The cut was 8.5 inches long, and deep. I went in ER surgery, was in the hostpital for 4 days, and went home on a home IV Mom said I'd never ride again-at least while I lived in her house. Now I am a member of the Kentucky Junior Rodeo Association. I am going to ride Steers, maby bulls, Bareback Bronc, And I will chute dog. Its been my dream since age 2 to ride bulls, now its starting to come true. This is all true, Gods honest, or I wouldn't type this much. I was hurt 2/22/04. It is now 3/15/05.

I live in Houston Texas and my dad is a bullrider! Im 14 and I hav been riding horses all my life! What I think is funny is.. when people come down here from out of state to see our rodeo they whyere the weirdest things! I've seen girls walking wround the rodeo in a mini skirt and flip flops with a cowboy hat on!! I've seen Men walk around with muscle shirts and caki shorts and flip flops on. These people do not know how to dress for the rodeo. Last year when my dad was ridin i was sittin on the gate watching. Next thing i know , some girl walks up to me about 17 and asked me if i got my hat from " abrecombie"! I didnt even know what that was untill she explained. come to find out its some store? Well i simply explained that....they dont make Stetson hats at " Abercombie"...... I got my hat at Cavenders boot babe!!!

love always...

I sit here and read the stories that people are telling about how they go and watch a rodeo and how tough bullriding is and how dangerous it is but let me tell you from my end! My name is Haley Murphy I live in Colorado with my husband who is a bullrider! I have seen him get tossed, thrown beat up and stepped on it is a day to day life for me! I have watched my husband die and get jumped back to life and he still does because it is what he loves to do everyone says I am crazy for letting him do it but I am not I stand beside him each and every night he gets on the back of a bull! For when I was in high school I used to ride for fun with a bunch of my friends and it is a blast to do! No matter if it is our friends ridding or my husband there is one Prayer I say each time and two of our very good friends wrote it here it goes.

BULL RIDERS PRAYER

AS I LIVE THE COWBOY WAY,
PROTECTION IS WHAT I PRAY,
I DON'T KNOW MY FATE,
OUT OUT OF THE GATE,
IF MY RIDE SEES THE TROUBLE,
SEND THE ANGLES ON THE DOUBLE,
FOR IN YOU LORD I REST,
LET MY LIFE PASS YOUR TEST,
BY PURE GRACE I'M SAVED,
LORD, RIDE WITH ME FOR YOUR WAY IS PAVED,
THATS THE COWBOY WAY
AND WHAT BULL RIDERS PRAY...

Hi my name is Tara I was working on an english paper. I'm doing it over rodeo well the WPRA I loved your page I was raised in Lane, OK and I know Clyde and Elsie Frost and their daughter Robin. My dad went to high school with Lane. I've never met him but from what his parents say he had a big heart and was always there for them I just wanted to tell you that I like your page and I that I also learned a few interesting facts from it.

Tara

Well this is kinda of like another story on the web page, but I was watching PBR the other night and realized that bullriding in my mind is the most dangerous sport. Some may agree and others may not. I dont see how all these ppl think the only reason ppl ride bulls is for the money. But I dont feel that way one of my best friends told me he rode for the enjoyment, and that changed the way I looked at bullriding if you take that in to consideration you will also see why these men go out almost everyday of there lifes risking it, and also you have a great website dont ever shut it down.

Hi, my name is Kelsie, I live in Idaho and have my whole life. I grew up on a ranch and have been riding since I was less than a year old. I have been active in 4-H and rodeo for a long time and am currently trianing my 5 year old Quarter horse for barrels, in fact I just ran him for the first time in August, we got 23 seconds, which isn't bad considering what had happened right before my run. See I was the 2002 rodeo queen, and so we had to do our buzzes and of course I always led everyone, well we had been running cattle from one of the corners of the arena and when I was flying around doing my wave I lost my stirrup and when we came around that corner my horse did a 180 faster than you could imagine, and since I didn't have my stirrup I fell off, but I hung there for a while since my vest was caught on the horn and the one foot in the stirrup was caught in it!!! It was a horrible thing but I think in the end it built Character. I got a pulled groin and the biggest bruise I think iver ever seen and since I almost got knocked out when I hit my head on the fence I put my hat on backwards when I got up!!!! I know its bad, but hey it could have been worse, I got back on and finished my run, I've never been one to fall off and not get back on. by the way, my horse is WELL over 16 hands tall. anyways, I have lots of stories from all my rodeo days but I think that one was one of the most memerable ones I know, thanks for listening,

HI I was just wanting to give you this story to see what you think of it:
Well on my birthday one night my mom and her boyfriend he's a bull rider decided to give me my present right before he went out to ride. I opened it and it was a picture of me, my mom, and him I gave him a hug and I never really found it hard to watch him ride, well that night made it really hard to watch him ride. He got tossed from the bull and the bull hit him with his horn and his horn went straight through Jason's stomach and I instantly was like whoa no Jason is the best I ran to the back with my mom when they took him back there we rode with him to the hospital he went in for a emergency surgery they thought he wasn't going to make it well come to find out I always say it was because he was so stubborn that he made it through the surgery. Well now he's my dad and he still rides and he's still stubborn as ever and that picture is right by my bed. That's my story love you daddy!

Hi my name is Jennifer Jordan and I go to my home town rodeo in montrose. It is really fun but in the winter it is very cold and i have to put on a million different clothes. I would like to take my little arabian mare to the rodeo but I don't want here to shy at every thing. But one of this days I am going to do it and I hope my horse Shania does really good and I think Lane Frost was a very hot cowboy. Cowboys are the hottest men in the world! Thanks for your time.

This isn't only a poem but a way of life to most cowgirls and boys!

Last of a Breed

As the sounds of the morning come dancin'
Through the darkness that's just before dawn,
An old sorrel mare lifts her head in the air
As a light in the bunkhouse comes on.

And then like an echo of things from the past,
A cowboy walks out toward the barn
With a Blue Heeler pup staying close to his heels
And a bridle hung over his arm.

And he walks in the tracks that his granddaddy made
Like a trip through a crevice in time;
It's a hundred year walk from the house to the barn,
But he knows in the back of his mind--

That he's one of the highly exalted
In love with the life that he leads.
He's known as a cowboy, a wild buckeroo,
A hero in legend and deed, he's one of the last of the breed.

The horses stand patiently waiting--
The sorrels, the buckskins, the blues,
And like him they're the grandsons of legends
Like Badger and Peter McQue.

And soon the time honored tradition
Of choosing a mount will take place,
And two kindred spirits will be partnered up
By a houihan's whirling embrace.

From the Blue Bonnet Prairies of Texas
Where the Indian Paintbrush grows wild,
To the Bitterroot Range of Montana
Where the big sky stretches for miles,

On the T L X and the Matador,
And the Quarter Circle A--
As the sunshine splits the darkness
The cowboy starts his day.

And he'll sit there like a monarch
In a three X beaver crown,
On a throne of hand tooled leather
Sixteen hands above the ground.

And he's sure that he's the richest man
That ever breathed in air,
Though his kingdom's filled with soapweed
And the sage and prickly pear.

He's one of the highly exalted,
In love with the life that he leads;
He's known as a cowboy, a wild buckeroo,
A hero in legend and deed --
He's One of the Last of a Breed

This is not really a story, but it's a poem I wrote after I figured out there was no way to compete with a cowboy's dream.
Cowboy Dreams
The look in your eyes,
has made me realize
that there's no reason to put up a fight,
'cause your gonna ride tonight.
I can't compete with your cowboy dreams,
I guess I need to put my mind at ease.
While you go be tough and bold
If thats what it takes to keep you to hold.
I'll keep crying my tears
and fighting my fears.
I can't help but think this could be your final ride,
and that makes me want to die inside.
Why are you willin'
to take a chance on gettin' your killin'?
But, as it would seem
I can't compete with your cowboy dream.
So I'll just keep holding my breath this way
as I hear you say
Boys-hold 'er steady
I'm almost ready.

Just some friendly advice ladies don't ever try to tame a cowboy! ~ Tonya Hughes

Well, when I started dating this Cowboy, he told me that he was a bullrider-- I thought "yeah right this guy just want's to impress me." Well two weeks passed and he bought me a ticket to the local bullriding classic because his cousin was going to ride. I went and picked up his cousin's girlfriend (one of my best friends) and his cousin gave her a call from my boyfriend's cell phone, well he told us that we needed to get to the fairgrounds and quick because it was about to start. Well, when we got to the gate-- my boyfriend didn't meet us to go get seats-- it was his cousin! His cousin had hurt his wrist and asked my boyfriend to take his place and my boyfriend wanted to see me before he rode and reassure me that everything was going to be ok. He gave me a quick kiss and then went back up onto the platform and after 2 rides he was up-- I was terrified, amazed, praying and crying talking to my best friend and her boyfriend. I had seen bullriding before and when the announcer said he had nodded-- my eyes became perminately fixed open while he rode. I couldn't believe it he was actually riding a bull! After he rode- he came over to me and told me "I told you so." During the rest of the rodeo, a storm moved in and it started to rain. We walked back to my car in the rain, and every time I hear "Like the Rain" by Clint Black, I remember that rodeo that he rode in. Even though he didn't make the 8 he came close--(since it was a local rodeo, I knew the people that were keeping the books so I knew the exact time he rode for), he still showed me that he was the real thing. Even though we broke up a month later, we are still best friends and I love him more every day. We have been through a lot together and I am thankful that he has been there for me and I am thankful that I can be there for him. We made a promise to each other-- that we would help each other's dreams come true. He aspires to be World Champion Bullrider, and I just want to do the small town rodeo thing--barrelracing. We plan sometime to go on a circut of rodeos that we can both enter--maybe we can make each other's dreams come true. Destiny has brought us together and has played a part in each of our lives. We thank God that we have found someone to rely upon.
Cowgirl Up,
Kyra

I've been riding since I was a little tot. Just recently, though, I have been getttin into some serious riding (horseback of corse) and have just begun ropin this past year. I dunno how well i'll do once I start competing, but that's no matter. Well, anyhow, when I was five, my family went broke, and we had to move to the city. Boy, I hated that!! Then when I was ten, we moved back to Wisconson. I am fifteen now, and have three of the most beautivul horses- a *Morgan*, a tennesee walking saddlebred, and a black paint tennesee walker. I ride bareback, and have defantally had my share of "accaidents." One time, I got hurt so bad that i couldn't ride for a whole week. That was torture. (i was working with a 'buckaroo' named Spanky by me, and everything was going fine until my uncle walked in. (My mom and me are the only 'horse persons' in my whole family) and then Spanky threw me agnst the fence. He kicked me while I was down, which is very strange for a horse, plus he was shod. I ended up with four broken ribs and a minor concussion. My uncle, being the moron that he is called the ambulance. Then I wasn't allowed out of the hospitial for FIVE (5) whole DAYS!) I also get in all kinds of trouble for skipping school to go out. They'd have to super-glue me to the ground in order to keep me off any horse in sight. I hope that when I get into competetion this winter that I manage at least a fair score. Thank you for allowin me ta write, and I would appreciate it if you'd got time, ta mail me-Veternairian102@yahoo.com Thank yall, and good luck in competition!

I've actually met Ty Murray twice. The first time I met him was when he was inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall Of Fame in Hico, Texas. I'm from nearby Iredell, Texas and they are both very near his home of Stephenville. It was an autograph signing and I got my picture taken with him (along with my mom) and I got an autograph of course.

The second time was a little more interesting and unexpected My friend, Desira, and I were in Wal-Mart and were sort of acting like idiots (and of course everyone was looking at us and I wonder if Ty was too...) skipping like in the Wizard of Oz singing the song as well.. and singing it very loud. Just as we got to the end of one aisle I saw a man in a flannel jacket, blue jeans, and a baseball cap, and I though 'Wow, he looks a lot like Ty Murray.' So I grabbed my friend and asked her if she knew who he was, she said yes. So I told her I just saw a guy and I think he was Ty Murray. She immediately started running after him down the aisle and I followed her. I wasn't sure if it was really him so I chickened out and told her to go ask if he was who we thought. She hesitated but she did it anyway. I stood looking at posters and I realized she hadn't come back yet so I ran around to the aisle she was on and sure enough there was Ty Murray signing an autograph for my friend (using a cheetah print pen with one of those feathery Pom Pom things on the end of it... that was pretty funny looking!). I ran up and I whispered in my friends ear, to get him to sign something for me but she instead just introduced me... Oh well. He said How are you? and of course I told him I was fine and asked him how he was and he said the same. It was really cool and We freaked out like little teenage girls ( which we are actually... 14 and 15 to be exact...) But it was pretty cool. I just wanted to share the story with you.

Thanks,
God Bless,
Heather Searcy

I personally have never ridden in a rodeo. Growing up, I was involved heavily in 4-H and eventually became the assistant to our 4-H Rodeo Coordinator. In my time invovled with the rodeo, I learned many things, but most of all, I learned a valuable lesson about the human spirit.

As an assistant to our 4-H leader, I worked with all of the riders in all categories. I watched as our young ropers caught their first calf, and saw the smiles on their faces when they got their belt buckles. I cringed whenever one of our riders drew a bull that had a reputation, and prayed as they came out of the chute. I cried as I watched a young man ride a bull that nobody thought could be ridden, and get a score of 87. It was after watching that ride, that the realization hit me...Cowboys and Cowgirls are a special breed.

After this young man made his ride, his hand got caught up, and we all stopped breathing. The rodeo clowns freed him, and he was fine, as he climbed up the rails to get away from the still raging bull, the bull charged him. He was hit in the back and fell like a rag doll, unconcious. He stayed on the rails hanging by his knees as the bull made one last effort to get even with him, the bull hit him again in his chest, and the crowd fell silent. I still remember running out of the arena and up to the main road in the pouring rain to flag the ambulance to the right place. My heart broke for that man, and I was praying as hard as I knew how. The ambulance took him to a nearby hospital, and his fellow cowboys and cowgirls joined in a prayer before continuing on with the competition.

The young man was released from the hospital in time for the final day of competition, but was too beat up to ride again. He suffered 3 broken ribs, and a minor concusion from hitting his head on the railing. He rode into the arena during Grand Entry and received a standing ovation, and when the bull riding competition was over, I learned my greatest lesson. They brought the bull that had hurt him back into the chute. He geared up and sat himself back down on that bull. They never opened the chute, he just sat there. He showed the bull that though hurt, he was not defeated.

That day, I realized that even when the chips are down, and it looks as though you have been defeated, there is a part in every cowboy that refuses to go down quietly. I applaud all of the cowboys and cowgirls that compete in rodeos, or who just ride for leisure, my hat's off to you! I will always be a Rodeo fan!!

God Bless,
Sandy

Well bull riding is pretty invigorating, fun, and very very dangerous. But I love it. Theres no feeling in the world that even comes close to the adrenaline rush you get when that animal busts out of the that bucking chute with you strapped to his back.
I've been riding bulls for about 5 years now and have definately had my share of injuries, but I choose not to even think about those little mishapps... I mean just like any sport there's gonna be some injuries... It just so happens that in this sport the injuries tend to be a little more severe. But they always heal with time.
Well i just started college this year, and i plan to start riding on the college rodeo Grand Canyon Circuit, hopefully I do good, and not have too many injuries, and win lots and lots of money!!!

Some girls may dream about movie stars and sports heroes, but not me. Not long ago, I started watching pro bull riding and fell madly in love with it and its riders. One night while I was watching an event, I suddenly realized that these men rode bulls for the pure joyous rush of it, nothing else. They don't care about the money or the fame, it is for the joy of knowing that they're doing something they love and not sitting behind a desk in a suit. Someone once told me that there was no future in cowboys, but I beg to differ. There's more than just a future in them, there's a dreive and a light that comes from within that I have only seen in a few people in my young years. So ladies, the next time you here that buzzer just remeber that even if you combined all the sports heroes and movie stars they'd never equal a cowboy.

Well, reading all of the other, well, inspirational stories on this page, I feel almost a little silly writing a humourous one. But here goes. A friend of ours is a nurse/emt, and often pulls rodeo duty. One time, however, she actually went to the rodeo as a spectator. One man was riding bulls and got hurt pretty bad. He was laying in the back of the ambulance, unconcious. Now, EMTs have a really nasty sense of humour. They have to, right? They see so much pain and death, its a defensive device. So don't be offended, ok? Anyway, they had worked on this man before, and they know that from the knee down he had a prosthesis. They unhooked it through his jeans, and called over one of the other cowboys to pull off his boots. One came off fine. He started on the other one. It came off, and he stared at it for a second, then screamed "his boot! I got his whole leg!" Then he threw it back over his head, and ran away. Y'all probably don't believe that this is true, but really, it is. So I make a recomendation to all of you out there; never take off a cowboys boots for him.

This past summer I realized that cowboys are the best man on earth. Not only is my dad a 100% cowboy but the man of my dreams is 100% cowboy. My mom tells me that cowboys arent worth a %$#@ but I understand that. In any type of person, cowboys, jocks, blue collars, there is losers in all catagories. I was lucky enough to find one that is the greatest so follow your heart!!!!
