Lauren Johnson Memorial

District

SAN ANTONIO -- Dominance was the key word for the Memorial Vipers on Tuesday at the District 28-5A Golf Tournament. Turning in five scores in the 70s and claiming the top-five individual spots, the Vipers opened up a 22-stroke advantage at Cedar Creek Golf Course and appeared all but assured of wrapping up their second consecutive District 28-5A crown. The Vipers turned in a pair of 76s and a pair of 79s to card a 310 and easily outdistance San Antonio Brackenridge, which finished at 332. The Memorial B-team was eight strokes back at 340. While the Vipers jumped in front in the boys race, the Memorial girls were assured of another one-two finish. MHS was the only school to field teams in the event. The Lady Vipers A-team played a little erratic but still managed to come home with a 330, while the B-team finished at 394.

Hillyer had a 40-39, Hendrix a 39-40 and Pribyl a 41-38. Brackenridge meanwhile is trying tot unseat the Memorial B-team from its runner-up finish last year and got an early jump on the feat. Faced with a huge task Wednesday, the Memorial Vipers' second team rose to the occasion and made it a Victoria sweep at the District 28-5A golf tournament at Willow Springs Golf Course. With the top two girls places already assured after Tuesday's first round and the Vipers A-team holding a comfortable 20-stroke advantage, the biggest question was whether or not the second team could overcome an eight-stroke deficit to take the boy's runner-up spot. Paced by Grant Murray and Erich Schneider, the Vipers left little doubt as they blew by San Antonio Breckenridge to claim the runner-up spot and send all four Memorial teams back to San Antonio for the Region IV-5A Tournament on April 23-24. It was the second straight year for the Vipers to qualify all four teams to the regional tournament. Murray fired a 4-over 76 and Schnieder a 5-over 77 to lead the second team to a 319 team score and an eight-shot advantage over Brackenridge. Lance Hansen and Bradley Bongers added a pair of 83s as the Vipers finished the two-day event with a 659, 44 strokes behind the Vipers first team. Brackenridge, which finished with a 667, fired a 335 final round. Murray and Schneider finished with a pair of two-day 161s, while Bongers finished at 167 and Hansen at 170. Marcus Padilla carded a 90-85-175. The Viper first team shot a strong 305 final round to run away with the tournament with a 615.
