Decipho is a user fuelled search engine that allows users to tag items listed in its crawler-based directory. After performing a keyword search, a user is given the option to narrow their search by querying tags of interest. A full list of tags appearing in a given keyword search is displayed at the bottom of the list of search results. Del.icio.us is a social bookmarking site. Users create bookmarks with tags for easy retrieval, which makes their bookmarks easily searchable. The index is created by users, and so may not be the most reliable, but those searching are reassured by the fact that nearly all pages in the index have been visited by those who bookmarked them. Digg is both a community of users and a compendium of searchable websites. Sites and videos are submitted to Digg whena user deems them interesting. After submission, the pages and videos are open to voting and discussion. Thus, more popular submissions are promoted and prominently displayed, while unpopular ones are removed from rotation. All of this takes place in real time, so results from Digg are very current. Peekyou is a people search that not only returns results on the person in question, but also on websites, social networking sites, photos, videos, etc. that are associated with that person online. Social Grapes provides comprehensive searching across a wide variety of social networking sites. Spurl is a social bookmarking site similar in construct to del,icio.us, but with improved browser integration through the use of an innovative sidebar structure, and the ability to upload bookmarks in groups from your browsers on various computers. Zabasearch scours various internet depositories of information, allowing users to locate public information about persons or businesses within the US. |
