Stay Gold

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

-Robert Frost

Ever seen that movie, "The Outsiders"? Or read the book? (which is even better) Well, in 8th grade I had to read the book, and I watched the movie to help prepare myself for the test in case I didn't read so good. (which most students don't!) *S* So when I watched it, some things really hit home about the theme of the book. I think that the theme was "Nothing Gold Can Stay", like the poem by Robert Frost that Johnny told Ponyboy about when he was dying. Johnny said that it meant to always keep the pure and innocent part of you, like the way people like sunsets, and that sort of thing. Stevie wonder wrote a song about this, and here are the lyrics:

Seize upon the moment long ago
One breath away and there you will be
So young and carefree
Again you will see
That place in Time....So Gold!

Steal into that way back when
You thought that all would last forever
But like the weather
Nothing can ever...and be in time
Stay Gold

But can it be
When we can see
So vividly
A memory
And yes you say
So must the day
Too, fade away
And leave a ray of sun
Stay Gold

Life is but a twinkling of an eye
Yet filled with sorrow and compassion
Though not imagined
All things that happen
Will age too old
Though Gold
Though Gold
