Cold Air Intake system for 1998-1999 Toyota Corollas
Version 1 (Intake with battery in trunk):
Version 3 (Intake with battery in stock location):
I am
an engineer at Harvey Mudd College and I have been experimenting with different
intake setups for the 1998-1999 Corolla. This
is a homemade cold air intake that is exactly like AEM systems at a fraction of
the price. The proof that cold air
intakes work has already been exhausted, and I have tried everything from hot
air intakes, ram air intakes, ram air with coffee can heat shield intakes, and
everything in between. This is by far the best setup I have ever done. I have
been experimenting with different intake setups for years, and this is my final
and best setup yet.
This is better than Regular Intakes because:
Regular intakes pull in hotter air so your reactant mixture is less dense,
causing less energy-yielding combustions, thereby lowering horsepower. This is
basic chemistry but if you are really curious you can ask me more through
e-mail. Regular intakes also have a relatively short intake pipe compared to
cold air intakes. Longer pipe lengths have been proven to have better resonance
effects and the air is more streamlined when it reaches the throttle body.
This is better than Ram Air Intakes because:
You are still not pulling in true cold air unless you encase it, which is what I
did in my previous setup. However, with ram air intakes, you have the filter
placed closer to the throttle body and you lose the resonance effects of a
longer cold air intake pipe. The ram air enclosed setup also lacks the high end
rush of power that cold air intakes provide, because at that high flow velocity,
the cold air intakes promote much better flow characteristics as described
before.
The filter will not get dirty because:
The filter is located behind the bumper and to the right,
near the fender well. It is completely shielded from debris and water. There is
no line of sight to the filter unless you stick your head under the bumper and
place your head close to the center of the bumper. It is basically protected
from debris and water, but free to suck in air at ambient temperature.

The intakes will be sent with the finish you see in the pictures. You can then paint it or powder coat it if you so desire.
EL Prototypes also makes excellent cold air intakes for Corollas for all years. Their version for the newer 2000 and on models with the MAF sensor has a welded flange that matches perfectly with the sensor. Their intakes are usually one or two piece with a nice finish. Their intake is more expensive, but it also looks better. You decide for yourself, just don't call them and complain about how I sell the intake for cheaper because they will get mad at you and then they will get mad at me.
