It was the twenty-fifth year of Chien Lung's ruling. That year, Alihezhuo, a distant king from Hui Jiang brought his beloved daughter, Princess Han Xiang to Beijing so that he could give her to the great Emperor of the Qing Dynasty as a settlement for the dispute between their countries. Poor Han Xiang had already fallen in love with someone else that time, he was called Ming Dan.

The King mother returned to the palace from her temple in the mountain. Xiao Yen Ze's rude manners and unacceptable way of speaking distressed the King mother a great deal. The Queen and Rong Muo Muo were at the time adding fuel to fire which made the King mother doubt more of Xiao Yen Ze and Ce Wei's true identity.

Chien Lung was greatly pleased with his "so called" present from Alihezhuo but Han Xiang was not a bit thrilled. She told her story to Xiao Yen Ze and Ce Wei, they were touched by her story and decided to help her in any way. They asked for Liu Qing and Liu Hung's help for they owned a resturaunt in Beijing. Ming Dan was badly injured from trying to save Han Xiang and was coincidentally saved by Yung Chi and Er Kang.

Everyone was touched after hearing their tragic love story and all promised to help them. On the other hand, Chien Lung had already married Han Xiang and named her - Xiang Fei ( Mistress Xiang ).

The King's mother cared for Qing Er (another princess) dearly and wanted to engage her to Er Kang but when she heard that two of her favorite boys -Yung Chi ( Wu A Ke) and Er Kang were both already engaged to two of her most disliked grand daughters - Xiao Yen Ze and Ce Wei, she was furious. Ce Wei and Xiao Yen Ze were punished several times for not obeying the rules, partly because of the King mother's rage. One day, as they went to Hui Ping Lou - Liu Qing/Hung's resturant, they met Xiao Jian. Yung Chi thought that he and Xiao Yen Ze were alike in many ways, it turned out later in the story that Xiao Jian was Xiao Yen Ze's long lost brother.

The Mother Queen disliked Xiao Yen Ze more and more because Xiang Fei was close to Xiao Yen Ze. She was poisoned by the Mother Queen. By this, Xiang Fei nearly died but she was saved in the last minutes by Xiao Yen Ze and Ce Wei who rushed back to the palace after been informed by Qing Er about the murder attempt. The gang soon decided that it was the right time to help Ming Dan and Xiang Fei.

The escape was soon found out by the Emperor. He was furious and out of his mind so he set out the date for his two favorite daughters' death.

Xiao Yen Ze, Ce Wei, Yung Chi, Er Kang, Xiao Jian , Liu Qing and Liu Hung escaped from Beijing on the day of the princess' execution. They promised to never return to the palace (which they now called memory city) again. In their runaway, it was revealed that Xiao Jian was indeed Xiao Yen Ze's long lost brother, whose parents were executed by Chien Lung nineteen years ago. But Xiao Jian, a warrior, then decided to keep the secret about their parents' murderer for himself.

The King was already thinking over everything and trying to get his children back so he sent his men to find them. The Queen, on the other hand, sent men of her own to secretly murder them all. After receiving news from his men that Er Kang and Yung Chi were hurt badly and Ce Wei became blind as the result of the attacks, he personally went to meet them, and ask them to return to the palace. They were touched by the Emperor's personal words ( Guys, this is the most touching part, don't miss it ! ), and agreed to return.

All of the Queen's bad deeds were told to the Mother Queen. She was enraged. The Queen was about to be separated from her child and placed in the Cold Palace when surprisingly Ce Wei and Xiao Yen Ze begged for her mercy, which touched the Mother Queen. Then everything went back to the way it used to be. The Queen and Rong Muo Muo hand-sewed Ce Wei and Xiao Yen Ze's wedding gowns to prove their sincerity. They gratefully accepted the gifts.

Finally, there're the weddings of the couple : Xiao Yen Ze with Yung Chi, Ce Wei with Fu Er Kang, which turned up messy when the brides were guided to the wrong grooms !

Waw ! I 'm not a fanatic of Cheung Yao's novels, but this one really captivated me. I like the vividness of the characters, the humour, the settings of the film and the happy ending. So, feel sorry if you skip just one episode of the serial !
