Aug 12, 1999:
All Time Favourite Fighter
is the McDonnell Douglas/Boeing F/A-18 Hornet.
Developed to meet the USAF/USN Lightweight Fighter Requirement and
flew for the first time around 1974 as the YF-17. Its competition is
the YF-16, which ended up being the USAF winner, and became the
venerable F-16. However the YF-17's multi-mission potential was
recognized by the Navy as well as the USMC... the rest is history.
The F/A-18 initially replaced both the F-4 Phantom and A-7 Corsair.
But its role became more important than that, subsequently
replacing/supplementing for the A-6 Intruders and F-14 Tomcats as
well. An electronic warfare variant is under development in the Super
Hornet (E/F series) versions to hopefully replace the aging and
scarce EA-6B Prowlers. Super Hornet is currently (Aug 99) undergoing
OPEVAL at China Lake, after 2 successful sea trials. Initial export
orders were slow compared to the F-16, with only Australia, Canada
and Spain signing up quickly. In recent years, Finland, Kuwait,
Malaysia!, Switzerland and Thailand have also wised up.
Current favourite though is the Saab JAS 39 Gripen.
Other favourites include the F-4, F-14, JA 37
Viggen, MIG-29, Mirage 2000, and maybe Rafale and Eurofighter
Typhoon in future?
Modern Attack/Bombers: Hornet, A-10, Jaguar, B-1, A-4SU Super Skyhawk
(just kidding)...
Helicopters: Mil-Mi 24 Hind, Cobra, Huey, Lynx, A109...
Experimental/Tech-Demonstrators/Others: X-31, X-29, EAP, YF-23...
World War 2 era

P-40 Hawk series,...
Attack/Bombers: B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell, JU-87 Stuka, TBF
Avenger, Avro Lancaster...
All these as of Aug 1999. 10 years later, if i'm still alive, I might read this list and say, "Am I kidding?"
