Contruction Page

Creating your own personal web page is easy.

First go to Geocities and check out each nieghborhood. Decide wich one is for you. Right away find out if there is a vacancy. If not go to second choice of neighbor hood etc.Geocities gives you 11 MB of space, more than enough for most people. If you don't get a space in your first choice don't worry about it. Just check back once a week until a space opens up.

Now once you have a space reserved got to your search engine and find Hippie97 or Hippie 98. Download and install.
Hippie98 (or 97) is by far the best program for a novice. All you need to do is follow the instructions in the Tutorial. After you have started your new page, save and save anytime you put something in that you want to keep. When you want to expeiment with all the tools do it on a new page. Kinda like using scrap paper.

When you have a page set up you'll need to go to geocities/members area/file manager to install your page. After you upload your page, you'll then need to change the file name to index. Anytime you make changes in the main page you'll need to delete the index page in file manager, upload the updated page and change the name to index. In your other sub-pages you only have to delete the old one before uploading the updated page. You could name your main page index, but I don't because I am experimenting with main pages. I have a choice of three main pages.

Now for some fun. In any search engine type in "free graphics". This will lead you to many sites that offer free graphics. All they ask is that if you use their graphic that you give them credit by either inserting their logo or link on your page or both.

If you don't have a zip drive. I suggest that you have a separate floppy for html files, picture files, backgounds files, hyperlinks files and midi files.

About pictures. Many people don't have a scanner, but perhaps you know someone that does. Hatve he person scann the photo using the smallest resolution, then save it as a gif file. This is to get the amount of memory below 100 KB. Granted you have 11 MB available in geocities but anything above 100 KB takes to long to download when a person visits your page. If you plan on using a lot of photos, you have a problem. Before they have a chance to download the visitor has already left. You'll have to have your own scanner and will have to learn how to create thumbnail .gifs. Otherwise you should make the photo a separate link.

Some hints. Devide the main page in parts with a line separating the parts. Use a different font and color of font in each part.

A source for great midi.'s is at Laura's Midi Heaven.
