There are two types of Pandas. The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda Melanoleuca) and the Red Panda or Lesser Panda (Ailurus Fulgens). Pandas eat a diet that consists primariy of bamboo. It makes up approximately 90% of their food intake. Pandas do not hibernate in the winter as does the black and brown and many other types of bears.

Pandas can only mate once a year. In doing so, if they are lucky enough to have an offspring and it lives, then they will care for this young one for approximately a year and a half before it moves on to live on its own.

Pandas generally live only about 15 years in captivity. And in captivity it is harder for the pandas to reproduce young. This was something to be looked into and until recently they had no way of dealing with it. Now they use invetrofertilization to impregnate the female.

A newborn Panda weights approximately 5 oz, is white and blind. It will however get its black and white markings in about a months time.

The mother Panda will cradle its young in its arms, and hold it the baby up on its shoulder. It will snuggle the baby to keep it warm.

There are only about 800-1000 Pandas left. Some of those in captivity. They and other endangered animals are dying faster than they can reproduce. It is sad to think that one day these and other beautiful animals will one day be gone.

Please take a moment to look over the links below to find out more info on the pandas and/or how to save them and other endangered animals. And I urge you to PLEASE visit the World Wildlife Foundation site and make a donation if you are able. They are doing good work to help the endangered animals but they need the funds to always continue.

I would like to thank a dear friend of mine for making a donation in my name as a gift. And what a grand gift. A gift for me that will also help the animals. I couldnt have asked for anything greater.

Thank you Sue!!!!
