Flipping a row boat is something that rarely happens... but unfortunately it happened to me! HAHAHA!!! I'll try to describe it in detail... It was a beautiful day for rowing: sunny, a little windy so the water was a little choppy (a word Regina used to describe the 'calmness' of the water), and pretty cold since it was at the end of October. We took out two boats: a triple (three people sculling without a cox) and a four (four people sweeping with a cox). I was on the bow seat in the triple, and therefore was facing the back of the other 2 in the boat. Regina wanted the two boats to race against each other, and she gave the triple a head start. So the 3 of us started to row... very fast. Then about 10 strokes later, all of a sudden the 3 of us lost balance together. I could see that all of us were kind of froze in action, and the same thought were going through our heads: oh shit! 'Cause we could all see that the boat was flipping over, and that there was nothing we could do to stop it from happening. We flipped to our left. The first thing I remember doing was getting my feet off the shoes that were tied to the boat. And the second thing was to come up to the surface of the water. The third thing I remembered was how cold the water was... it was freezing! Regina came in her coach boat as soon as we were under water. She pulled the three of us out of the water as soon as possible, for the water was too cold for anybody to stay for more than a minute. Another coach boat near by came to help us with our flipped row boat and the oars. Row boats are heavy, and you can't just flip it back. They held the boat beside their coach boat and headed for the dock. Regina was also heading for the dock with the three of us shivering and balled together. As unpleasant as it was, we'd laugh and laugh whenever we thought about it. A few days after that, we were in the change room at the Victoria City Rowing Club boathouse getting ready for practice when a girl from another school said, "I heard that a school flipped a triple the other day. This is the first time I've heard about someone flipping a row boat, you know?" we just kept real quiet... |
