My First Athletic Attempt

"Row, row, row your boat, gently down the stream..."

The second highlight of my life happened in my second year at SMS (St. Margaret's School). Before that time, I hadn't even heard of the word "rowing." Regina Montag, the coach of the SMS Senior Rowing Team, as well as one of the "housemothers" in the residence, asked me if I'd be interested in trying out for rowing. I guess it was my body feature that caught her eyes. I was never a skinny kind of girl, though I was never built either, since I didn't have the opportunity to be in any sports team in Taiwan. But somehow she offered me this opportunity, and I thought it wasn't a bad idea.

I had never seen people rowing in a race shell before, therefore I had no idea how rowing worked. I joined the team anyway since I thought that I should try some new stuff. But at the time the team had already started its practices for a week and a half. My teammates had had their swim test and basic oar training at the very beginning of the season. And because I was the only one without any experience, Regina, not wanting me to miss any practice by letting my watch, told me to get in an eight with 7 others and a coxin. "Just follow the others," she said. it was a little confusing at first, but I caught up pretty fast, though I did catch some crabs and got my boatmates all mad. But most important of all, I was enjoying myself. And I never had my swim test... shhh, don't tell anybody.

Regina gave me the greatest honor of reveiving the "novice rower of the year" award at the end of the school year. Came with the award was this big cup called the "rookie cup" that I got to keep for one year. My mom made me take some pictures of it before I had to return it to the school the very next year.
