IRC is Internet Relay Chat, a chat system outside the WorldWideWeb. No links can be provided from the WWW and to access IRC, a special programme called a chat client, is needed.
The various chat channels are on computer networks which can be regarded as a "net in the net" The two nets of relevance for us ABs and DLs are Undernet and Efnet.
At first, a suitable chat client needs to be installed. Windows users are recommended to install mIRC 5.02 which is available as mirc502s.exe (16bit) or mirc502t.exe (32bit). A link to the download site is provided in the forum's linklist. Don't get confused by the page, there are really only 2 files to worry about, i.e. either the 16bit or the 32bit. Choose a download site near you. http://www.mirc.co.uk
Links to sites offering chat clients for Apple MacIntosh. A popular client would appear to be ircle v3.0 available from ZDnet (search word IRC). htttp://www.zdnet.com/macuser/software/ , http://www.sk.sympatico.ca/~tucows/mac/tchat.html
The following is for Windows mIRC only:
After downloading and installing the programme, dial up, establish internet connection and call up the mIRC programme. In the first window that appears, fill in as many or as little details as you like. Minimum requirement are the two nicknames. After that, choose an Efnet server from the server list. To get to channel #Wetville, *ANYONE* Efnet server is okay, however, not every server will let you on. Choose a server near you and if access is denied, try another one. Please be sure to always click on Efnet servers ! Once you have accessed Efnet, a list of channels will appear. This list is NOT complete and #Wetville is not on it ! At first, enter the channel name in the field like this: #Wetville, then click on 'add' and only then on 'join' ! In future, the channel name #Wetville will appear in the list and a simple double-click will take you there.
Mac-users need to configure their chat client according to whatever instructions come with the software, however, access to #wetville on efnet is the same like described for mIRC, i.e. via anyone Efnet that will let you on.
Win95 users can run mIRC and their browser simultaneously, for instance with both windows reduced in size to half of the screen width and Bill's forum set to auto-refresh.
There are 2 other channels of interest to ABs and DLs: #dpf on Efnet and #diapers on Undernet. Both channels may initially not appear in the channel list, in which case they first need to added as described above.
Another chat option for Win95/Windows NT users is ICQ http://www.mirabilis.com. Mac-users are advised to monitor the Mirabilis site as ICQ for Macs is in the making. ICQ works independant from WWW and IRC on a net of its own and every user has a UIN Universal Internet Number. ICQ offers chat function, file transfer, URL tranfer, online and offline messaging and online notification. Very useful programme used by many of us to keep in touch. My UIN is 1414131.
I hope this helps. For any questions or further assistance, please email me
