TREMBLING GROUND
March 1998

How the great city's trembling ground is creased!
Tall marble columns tumble to the ground,
Fires erupt and an alarm is sound.
Multiplying are the people deceased.

Citizens run to the church and their priest,
While statues of the great fall all around,
And a new belief in God is now found.
Finally the earthen tremors have ceased.

The men come out from their cowering stance,
And begin to build their city anew.
With marble rising, they rejoice with dance,
But within the church is an empty pew...
