He began acting when, in the 8th grade, he suffered a concussion due to a football injury and was not permitted to play on the team that year. This caused him to want to find something new to occupy his time and he tried out for and got the role of "Danny Zuko" in his school's production of Grease.

On her first professional audition, she dazzled the casting director of the movie, The Ice Storm and got the job as the love interest of Toby Maguire in the film that starred Siguorney Weaver, Kevin Kline, Elijah Wood, and Joan Allen.
She sent in a tape of her audition for "Dawson's Creek" instead of going to LA to do it in person since she wanted to perform in her school's production of Damn Yankees. When her call-back for the show conflicted with the opening night of the play, she declined. The producers of the show rescheduled her call-back so she could come out at a later date and she won the role as Joey Potter.
