DIABETES Like I said on my main
page, I am diabetic and want to take some time to
educate the world on this disease. It is a very
common disease, but not much is known about it..there
r a lot of myths on it...I will start out with my
personal history of it and go from there..if I bore u
I am sorry, just skip this page but I figure if just
one person gets something out of this page it is
worth it...
I was diagnosed a diabetic at the age
of 27. I have type II diabetes or Adult onset
diabetes. No one else in my family has it or has
there been anyone else in the past diagnosed with it.
Let me tell u how my life changed drastically and
would never be the same.
We had gone to my neice's
birthday party and I was fine. We came home about
4pm and I went and laid down, because I was a little
tired(I seemed to always be tired). I guess that was
because I never got any sleep at nite, it seemed I
always had insomnia or was running to the bathroom 40
times a nite. Well, I woke up about 930 that nite,
freezing...i just could not get warm. Darin took my
temperature...it was 104°..I was dizzy, couldnt stand
up, couldnt see straight..Needless to say, he took me
to the hospital. I went in and waited and waited and
waited..my fever started to break and I made him take
me home, promising to go to the drs in the
morning.
I did go to the drs the next morning, was
told I had a kidney infection, given antibiotics and
sent on my merry way. That nite once again the fever
was back. I did everything we could think of to get
it to drop, but it wouldnt. So, he and my mom
decided I needed to be at the hospital..this time I
had to stay.
They did tons of tests. Took about a
gallon of blood. Also had to wait an eternity.
Finally, the dr came in and asked me, "How long have
you been diabetic?" I said, huh? I am not
diabetic...he said oh, yes..you are..your blood sugar
was over 300. WOW!!! (considering normal is 70-110)
I guess that was pretty high.
So that time I spent
a week in the hospital and they did tests galore.
Can u imagine, 1 whole week without being with my
kid. It was not a fun time. I had to see a
dietician and a nephrologist(specializes in kidney
diseases). I had to go take diabetes classes, to
learn how to live with diabetes. Also learn the
complecations of diabetes if u dont learn to keep ur
blood sugar at a safe level.
Now, I do not take
insulin. Yet. Thank God. I have been prescribed 2
different types of oral medications, Diabeta and
Glugophage. I also am trying to keep my sugar levels
down with diet. But this is difficult. But I am
trying.
I will be adding more info about
diabetes. Some links and some info, on early warning
signs. Also some important numbers and things
everyone should know. This will take time, so bear
with me...but 1 important piece of information, i
think everyone should know.
IF YOU COME IN
CONTACT WITH SOMEONE WHO IS EXPERIENCING A DIABETIC
"COMA", AND YOU FIND INSULIN IN THEIR POSESSION, DO
NOT, AUTOMATICALLY GIVE IT TO THEM. THEIR BLOOD
SUGAR MAY BE TOO HIGH AND NEED IT, BUT IT MAY BE THAT
THEY HAVE TOO MUCH INSULIN IN THEIR SYSTEM ALREADY
AND ARE HAVING A REACTION TO THIS. JUST CALL 911 AS
QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
