The
wide bay, protected by a slowly descending belt of cliffs facing south, has made it
possible for man to settle in this area since long ago. On the one hand, there is the sea
with its vast resources, enabling the development of fishing, sea trade and ship-bulding;
on the other hand there is the land, which satisfies the inhabitant's basic needs, such as
vine cultivation and olive porduction. These two separate worlds melt into one and breathe
as one. Thanks to the local's diligence and wotk-ethic, the town grew quickly in
importance, and became the island's economic and administrative centre during the XV
century. A compact nucleus of interconnected houses, built using the same architectural
and decorative elements, makes up the historical part of town. Undoubtedly, these stones
which have managed to save the character of days gone by, have in them the power of
bringing people together; they create a feeling of respect and admiration. Even those who
have left the island cannot help feeling its charm, and they return, just as a traveler
might return to a place particularly at heart, to renew old friendships and make new ones.
With their diversified tourist program the townspeople try to satisfy the needs of all
their guests. Cres can offer the traveler, its faithful visitor, a choice of hotels,
accommodation, bungalows that are part of the Gavza tourist resort, a large and well
equipped camp, and the opportunity to engage in a variety of sports.
