GROUP 3'S WEBPAGE ON NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION

PICTURE # 1

Welcome to our website on nonverbal communication! We are students at U-Mass/Boston currently taking Professor Michael Milburn's class, Psychology of Communication. Nonverbal communication is interpersonal communication though nonlinguistic means. Nonverbal communication is communication through gestures, facial expressions, movements, posturing and so on. For example, the sticking out of the tongue may communicate teasing; pointing the thumb to the floor or the "thumbs down" sign, may represent that something is bad, or that there is some disagreement. Nonverbal communication can be vary ambiguous, especially cross culturally. Some gestures in one culture have total adverse meanings in another. For example, the "O.K." gesture in North American culture, symbolizes money in Japanese culture, and in many Eastern European cultures the "O.K." symbol we know as a positive gesture has a very lewd negative meaning. Now, here are some links to other web pages on nonverbal communication. We are sure that the information you find will be interesting, helpful, and above all, entertaining!!!

Just for fun: see if you can guess what we are trying to communicate through our body language in each of the pictures! The answers appear at the bottom!!!

Because we use body language so much in our everyday lives (I know I have used little "hand gestures" once or twice in the past), it is important that we know how to communicate effectively nonverbally. The following are several links that show us how to do just that.

Here is a site that shows you six ways to improve your nonverbal communication skills. Although the information in the site is geared towards teachers and helping them improve their skills in the classroom, you can nevertheless use the info to better your own skills. Check it out:

Here is a site that also shows several ways to increase one's nonverbal skills:

Finally, here is a site that discusses the potential problem of one's NONVERBAL messages conflicting with one's VERBAL messages:

Hey, the following site doesn't have much to do with nonverbal communication, BUT it is entertaining nevertheless. It's my own personal website dedicated to the LADIES! Check it out!
