Stereograms are computer-generated images which have depth related visual information hidden in them. No one knows exactly how the brain interprets images as three dimensional. Infact, for a long time, no one suspected the brain to be involved in the process. It was thought to be a purely ocular activity. But now we know better!(though not all!) All along we have been brought to believe in what we see with our eyes, but when you stare at these images which are on a flat surface and slowly watch myriad multi dimensional forms floating towards you, you will discover a new way of looking at the world.

And that's not all. It has been proved that looking at these images has a positive effect on relieving stress. Preliminary experiments show that the EEG of persons shown these images indicates the presence of more alpha waves after the hidden image was seen (i don't know whether that is good or bad!!). In fact, the technique of viewing is very similar to the procedures described in the Hindu Shastras for the Trataka of meditation.

If you know how to view a stereogram then u can go directly to the stereogram gallery to view the stereograms displayed there, but if you need help then read on. There are two methods which a person who is viewing a stereogram for the first time can follow -
Method One: The Reflection Method
1.Position your eyes at a comfortable reading distance from the image.
2.Look through the image at the reflection of an object you see inside,eg. your face, eyes, shirt, etc.
3.Relax your eyes, keep looking deep beyond the surface at the reflection, and slowly the hidden image will rise out.
It is important that you remember not to look at any point on the image or the design but rather look deep thru the design at the reflection.

Method Two: The Nose Method
1.Hold your face close to the image so that your nose just touches it. Try not crossing your eyes, but just stare blankly thru the image. It will appear blurry.
2.At this point slowly, very slowly pull ur face back away from the image. All this time just keep staring thru the image. Don't focus your eyes on the image.
3.Stop at a comfortable reading distance, and keep staring thru the image. Do not get distracted at this point by shifting your focus back onto the surface of the image. If you do, start again.Slowly the hidden image will come into focus.

The important thing to note is that both methods help you change your focal point of view. Pretend as though you are looking thru the image at an object beyond it. The key is to relax (both mind and eyes) and let the effect take place. Once you get the hang of it you can start seeing the hidden images very easily and clearly, and then the images remain in focus even if u move your eyes back and forth over the image. Initially it might seem difficult to you but the resulting effect is well worth the effort and is truly mesmerising!

Now that you have learnt how to view a stereogram you can goto the stereogram gallery and try out your new found expertise! All the best to you! I really hope that you are able to see the hidden images!
