The county of Maine et Loire, which is part of Anjou, has a rich
history. Anjou was actually known already under Caesar, who occupied the
region, then known as Andecavi (or Andegavi) from 57 -56 BC. Later its
history was mixed with that of England since the Count of Anjou eventually became
King Henry II of England in 1154. This is the history of the Plantagenets
and much too long to be written about here. But, being in the heart of
the kingdom, Anjou thrived and today some of the most beautiful castles
in France are to be found here.
Here are some of the famous sites in the region, and all quite close to
Angers:
