anjou

The county of Maine et Loire, which is part of Anjou, has a rich history. Anjou was actually known already under Caesar, who occupied the region, then known as Andecavi (or Andegavi) from 57 -56 BC. Later its history was mixed with that of England since the Count of Anjou eventually became King Henry II of England in 1154. This is the history of the Plantagenets and much too long to be written about here. But, being in the heart of the kingdom, Anjou thrived and today some of the most  beautiful castles in France are to be found here.

Here are some of the famous sites in the region, and all quite close to Angers:

Angers   Beaufort    Brissac  Cunault    Fontevrault

Montgeoffroy    Montreuil Bellay    Montsoreau    Plessis Bourré

  Plessis Macé    Saumur    Serrant
