Doom on Linux
Yes I know, I know Doom is an old game and we should be worrying more about
Quake II, C&C. But I am not going to rest until both Doom and Leisure
Suit Larry 1 are functional under Linux. Here is some helpful hints on
installing doom under Linux.
-
You can download doom for linux from id
software. Get the svga one and also the IWAD file. They are in
the archive section.
-
Install the aout-libs package. The RedHat packages are in the directory
RedHat/RPMS on the first disk.
-
Copy the downloaded files to their own directory. I use /usr/games/doom
Use gunzip <filename> and tar -xvf <filename> to extract the files.
-
Rename the downloaded IWAD file as doom1.wad
-
Copy your WAD file from the DOS version and call it, say, doom.wad
-
Run linuxsdoom to start. N.B. You should be in the same directory as doom1.wad
-
Kill some monsters.
