Doom on Linux

Yes I know, I know Doom is an old game and we should be worrying more about Quake II, C&C. But I am not going to rest until both Doom and Leisure Suit Larry 1 are functional under Linux. Here is some helpful hints on installing doom under Linux.
  1. You can download doom for linux from id software. Get the svga one and also the IWAD file. They are in the archive section.
  2. Install the aout-libs package. The RedHat packages are in the directory RedHat/RPMS on the first disk.
  3. Copy the downloaded files to their own directory. I use /usr/games/doom Use gunzip <filename> and tar -xvf <filename> to extract the files.
  4. Rename the downloaded IWAD file as doom1.wad
  5. Copy your WAD file from the DOS version and call it, say, doom.wad
  6. Run linuxsdoom to start. N.B. You should be in the same directory as doom1.wad
  7. Kill some monsters.
